lol...there's alot about 2012...if you search HP you'll find a lot of threads about it, I don't know a great deal to be honest so I certainly wouldn't like to try and offer an opinion in the Scientific Matters forum:o but here's a link that covers the milky way thingy;)

The Large Hadron Collider(LHC) will not recreate the big bang but it will allow scientists to re-create what they believe conditions where like in the first few milliseconds after the big bang. This should mean that it's not powerful enough to wipe us all out.
On a Different note the Royal Society for Chemists appear to be a bit jealous and ahave launched a competition to rename the LHC. It's free to enterm follow the link

I just saw a report stating that the LHC has been turned off. A magnet is faulty and has caused a lot of damage. Whilst I don't pretend to understand the enormity of this, it seems a small thing to have caused a problem. No doubt it is nothing like the magnets you or I are used to. Oh well we can all sleep peacefully again now it's switched off. 😉 Yes this is a bit of a tongue in cheek comment. No doubt the scientists are bemoaning the years of preparation that must have gone into this programme. Maybe the time isn't right for this particular experiment.
