As far as hallucinations are concerned they could be a way of the mind relieving psychic stress by any means available. Nothing appears to be random as chaos theroy tells us.
A recent piece of work done suggested that hallucinations can be created by sensory input like sound waves that are below our hearing, as light images can be miss interpreted by the brain. We keep a poor memory of events and the brain can sometimes with thright impetus link memories of film material with real data so creating something that isn't real.
The mind is not well understood, there are plenty of theories but that all they are.
Chaos and intention
Hi Lookintomyeyes,
Great stuff!
Can you give us more details on the research you refer to?
My view is that we can take this analysis one stage further by hypothesis and eventual proof through practice that reality itself is a condensate of the observer effect... Manifestation is a chaotic emergence that is both a simultaneous projection and perception. Consensus reality is a dense condensate and is the subject of normal experience, whereas the hallucination is an ephemeral condensate that is uncommonly held and emerges concurrently with phase instabilities in the dense condensate.
The healer catalyses a phase change of the dense condensate into a healthy state. This is analogous to a chemical reaction or phase change that needs energy often combined with catalytic action. The phase change may result in an energy release or an energy debt depending on whether there is a change in mass from one state to the next.
While we are all magicians in this chaotic universe, manifestation with intention is only possible to the adept. The question must then be: What makes the adept?... but this is a topic for another thread...

Just purely IMHO, some hallucinations may be random, but I'd strongly suspect that others have triggers or meaning - even useful meaning perhaps. (But yes, what is 'random' anyway? Something we don't particularly find to be of use?)
I'm reminded of a phenomenon I've posted about elsewhere before. Sometimes I only gradually, such as over 48 hours, become aware that in the back of my mind a few lines from a song has been 'playing', and I've not paid it attention. It may be from anywhere - one I once knew well or one I scarcely heard, recent or from childhood, with serious lyrics or a ditty from a TV ad. And when I become conscious of the words, they've been "chosen" because they are telling me something very precisely about something that has just happened or is happening in my life. So this is far from random, and maybe "hallucinations" can be the same.
I'm putting the word inside quotes there, as IMHO a minority of "hallucinations" may actually be real seeing. This is HP after all, so what do mediums think they are seeing or hearing when communicating with those passed over? "Hallucination" is a blanket phrase that materialist-reductionists obviously use for what are actually clairvoyant perceptions. I come from an esoteric/occult background, so from my PoV, schizophrenia may, at least at times, be an instance of the natural boundaries between the living and the passed-over (and earthbound) being unnaturally not in place. Chronic alcoholics such as we see in the street have also had these natural auric defences worn away, and so, from my PoV, are talking to possibly real earthbound entities when they rant and rave in the street to unseen people. I once thought a very specific thought toward the unseen entity of a raving street alcoholic. Suddenly the entity (IMHO) entered the alcoholic's body and with some anger replied to my thought specifically and out loud. So, in short, a minority of "hallucinations" may be real perceptions which materialists will never accept as such, so they just label such behaviour.
