this is just a warning for anybody who leaves windows open overnight this morning when i got up i went to use the downstairs loo and heard a buzzing and there near me was the biggest wasp or hornet i have seen. well i shot out of there fast got my spray and left the door shut. later on i went in to shut the window and i looked up and there was this cone shaped thing i got hubby to look at it , i dont go near bugs and things when he removed it he said it was like a puff ball well it was not there yesterday cos i would have noticed. so got rid of it so be aware that this can happen. we are so pleased it happened when we were at home and not away god knows what we could have come home too

Ugh! Shudder! How horrible for you crystal_rose. [&:]:(

For anyone else who thinks they might have an infestation of some kind, it's worth a telephone call to your local council's pest control department. Even if they cannot offer a free service (depending on the pest), they can offer very useful advice.

RE: wasp nest

When our son was about 10 (17 years ago) he wanted a den so we put up a shed in our garden.

Next thing we knew a wasp had started to build a nest in there. Every year since a wasp has tried to build a nest in the same place and every year my husband gets out his blow torch and destroys it at the the very early stage before it develops too much.

It amazes us how there appears to be some sort of homing instict in different generations of wasp.
