Hi again! I have had an email from my friend who was in the NZ earthquake to say her son is now caught up with the flooding in Australia while on a 3 month trip there. How can one family from the UK be involved in two major events while in seperate places on their holidays?!

Yes, positive thoughts for your friend - it must be quite frightening to go through these things. Poor guy.
As a lapsed Australia (who's been in Edinburgh 15 years) I find the climate effects in Australia hard to fathom. It's a vast country - the same size as mainland USA - and so there is a lot of climatic variation. But part is having the worst drought for 50 years and has severe water usage restrictions... and those God-awful bushfires. But then the floods. It's so unfair. Wouldn't it be nice for the bits that needed water to get it, and those which could do with a bit of a dry spell saw an end to the rain.
