I had an infection (cellulitis) in my foot when I was a child and it wasn't treated swiftly enough by the doctors. when I finally got the right treatment for it most of my leg was infected causing damage to the lymphatic system causing Lymphoedema. The doctors did at the time admit this but since have always claimed the Lymphoedemawas always there (funny how I never noticed severely swollen legs and feet before LOL).
Anyway to get to the point although it causes me a little problem finding shoes and a little discomfort in the heat, there is a lot that can be done to ease this condition now. I had a reflexology treatment incorporating lymphatic drainage and I had several weeks of relief in the height of summer. Once the infection has cleared start doing some simple drainage techniques on a regular basis and you should be able to prevent this causing you too much stress. Plus if you can get someone else to do it for you all the better.
