RE: global warming issues

Having watched 'An inconvient truth' and followed some threads on
other forums last night, I'm interested to know people's thoughts and
views on global warming.

Do you think the risks are 'real' and imminent and what do you think
the answer is?
Is there an answer?

I'd like to canvas people's views on recycling as well. It's very much
a buzz word and I'm wondering where this fits into the global warming
picture.

I am disappointed that no one else has anything to say...and I'm rather sorry to have hijacked the thread for my own soapbox purposes, I hope it wasn't my posting that has deterred others from sharing their thoughts! Sorry Amethystcave, I thought it was a great thread to start!

RE: global warming issues

Killchar, I was thinking exactly the same thing this afternoon. I was going to bump it up tonight with an 'are there only 3 or so of us who actually *care* or have an opinion on this'. I've reaised this topic on three forums now and on each forum it has died.

That makes me jump to conclusions about whether people really do think about this issue, whether they think it is real or whether I'm just off on one myself LOL!

RE: global warming issues

People do care, I know I do. But maybe people find it hard to voice their opinions when sometimes they get shot down?
I definately feel we should be doing something for the planet, but it seems a little like too little too late. I recycle, and try not to be wasteful or throw too much away, etc, but we are only one household, and I live on a street full of people who probably aren't as bothered. Even my kids are being brought up in a way that makes them appreciate the planet. But I find that people on the TV go on about jeeps polluting the planet when there are worse things out there that they are not doing anything about, I mean did they just forget that sports cars probably have higher emmisions or something? This bothers me because I do drive a 4x4 but I feel I have a valid reason. I have three small children who I couldn't fit in a smaller car with their car seats. Then the government bring in the ruling about having booster seats for all young children (which I agree with) but how am I supposed to get them in a smaller car? It just doesn't work. We actually sold our second car because we could no longer fit all the kids in the back safely!
Sorry for ranting, but I try to do my bit and still feel got at by a government that could do things better for our planet than bang on about four wheel drives. (I now feel like I've gone off the subject a bit so sorry again!)

RE: global warming issues

Hi folks,

As I posted on the Second Namaste thread in the travel section, in the UK we can get to thinking we are "making a difference" by recycling a tin can. Then you come to India (or China). In India 1.1 BILLION people are falling in love with the internal combustion engine and haven't heard of global warming. They don't care, for they want a piece of modern action or technology and transport. The fumes rise up from the cities, millions wear face-masks, and I'd think all the best efforts the UK could ever do is equal per year to a week of Indian fume pollution.

In short, it isn't really now up to us. None of the PC arguments such as ourselves setting a good example will have any effect on the average Indian.

So it's a pessimistic outlook from me right now ....

Maybe people don't post as they feel the same?

I think thats very true Venetian (how are you by the way?)

Locally 'they' have just brought in recycling - due to targets & quotas etc - and yet we don't actually have the facilities. So we can sort and recycle but where will it all go? I guess maybe I'm too cynical but I've seen too much evidence of 'recycling' being sent oversea for landfill so it ends up being a double whammy on the environment.

I really feel that the government is doing too much knee jerk reaction to hit the headlines than working behind the scenes.

Recently we flew out on holiday (first time ever for my kids aged 8 & 10) and on the way to the airport which was at 3am we saw so many lights - CArcraft for example was brighter than Wembley on a match night - but at 3am WHY!!! So we paid out pollution tax to the govt for out flight - what do Carcraft pay for such blatant waste of energy? Why are they even allowed to be lit up at that time of night?!?

This is the type of thing that makes me angry - and so frustrated - as has been said we can all try and influence attitudes and maybe the 'intention' and positive thoughts will eventually make a difference but what little we can do is so easily absorbed elsewhere.

Anyway - aargh!!
