A charter for GM Contamination
The Government has promised a public consultation on GM co-existence proposals. Now two years later than expected they are published. Unfortunately these proposals are as feared a blueprint for GM contamination. Key elements in the proposal include:
*
Allowing up to 0.9% routine GM contamination of non-GM (including organic) products.
*Ludicrously small separation distances between GM and non-GM crops (35m for oilseed rape).
*Very weak liability proposals
*Not telling the public where GM crops are being grown
Rather than facilitating co-existence this proposal seems to be a charter to facilitate GM contamination. Despite this bias towards the biotech industry, this consultation is addressed to the public and we should respond.
