RE: Astrology, Omar Khayyam, and Yogananda
Here's another lineage believing themselves to be the best and closest to the Kriya original. Perhaps they are since Lahiri Mahasaya, guru of Sri Yukteswar, passed it down through this line to his son, thence on to his grandson.

Dear No Patterns
Thank you for sharing, an important message for me to put my armlet back on too! I agree with you and Sri Yukteswar, everything has an important reason for being the planets and their energies are here to help us to chart and overcome our obstacles not obstruct us. I see them like having a road map in the car, if you know your way that's cool if not you can always refer to the map if you get lost.
Perhaps someone would like to tell us more about Kriya.
And I am still interested in the re-translation of the word Gin if anyone knows because Gin is an excellent blood cleanser whether it existed in Omar's day or not.
Blessings in abundance

Dear Kim
You must have missed my earlier posting on this thread: 'gin' here surely means a trap, a snare for eg rabbits.

On 'gin', Sunanda, remember that it's a liberal translation into English from the 19th century when gin was a more popular drink than today ('gin mills', etc). So, without knowing what the actual Persian word used by Khayyam was, my guess would be that, since presumably there was no gin in Persia in that day, it's a liberal translation of a reference to alcohol or, more likely, a particular Persian beverage. The word 'gin' would therefore just be the translator's word for ... well, gin! 😀
Khayyam uses the alcohol and intoxification metaphor for two kinds of state of consciousness: being lost in maya and illusion, or basically its total opposite, spiritual union and bliss. (Perhaps it's a pity he didn't use two different metaphors for the two different states.)

I don't know about any one group have exclusive rights to Kriya. Don't forget that each of the gurus had students who themselves had students who had students and so on! As long as they are officially able to initiate people into kriya yoga, that's all that matters.
