I dreamed last night that my sister in law was murdered before my eyes, shot in the head. During the dream I remember being very distressed and upset and unable to overcome the grief.

Strange, my sister in law is getting married in July and is rather stressed. I have offered my services of taking the photos at the wedding but she has not given me a straight answer. She's also trying to organise a surprise birthday party and although I'm making the cake, she's not keen in getting me involved. So wonder whether it relates to any of that.

I've dreamed of death before but nothing like this. Its really upset me.

Thanks

Hi there. Don't be upset - dreaming of a death usually indicates a great concern for or about that person. (Jung.) It can be a sign of caring & love. (In this case, perhaps your wish for a closer & more loving relationship w her? Esp since she hasn't taken up your kind offer of help yet?)

The elements of dreams often come from things encountered in our daily life that we blotted out, but which have potentially huge emotional impact. The news lately has focused on the shooting of that poor little 10-year-old boy - something I simply couldn't bear to watch or hear, for sheer grief. Is it possible that you also 'stored away' a strong reaction to the shooting, so it re-surfaced when your unconscious mind was uneasily struggling with your sister-in-law?

Also, our unconscious is often childishly literal in 'acting out' figures-of- speech ... so your wish to 'shoot' (i.e. photograph) her was linked with the boy's murder image once the rational left-brain was switched off in sleep.

I don't know if any of this rationalisation helps. It certainly helped me when I repeatedly dreamed something similar. I was terribly upset until a psychologist friend pointed out how childish & irrational our unconscious is, & how any frustration with someone can often show up as dreaming bad things about them ('in revenge', once our self-censorship faculty is sleeping!). But this doesn't indicate any real bad intent - just a short-term 'I hate you!' tantrum! Your grief indicates that, despite your frustration, you care for her really!

Hope things settle for you more happily.
Cheer-up vibes on their way!

Hi

Thanks, makes me feel better. I haven't watched much about the 10yr old shooting as just refuse having a toddler myself.

However it may also be that this week was the anniversary of the murder of my mom's godmother (who lived in South Africa) and its brought up some memories for the whole family on how she died. I suppose my sub-conscious is worried about the people close to me being hurt.
