Not at all, AMB, 🙂

You are most welcome. No mistake on your part, indeed remarkable observation.

Most Hindus will be hard put to explain the significance of aum~, even though almost everyone chants it at some time or other.

I did try to explain it about 7 months ago on this MB, here:

To what extent I failed, only outside observers can truly judge.

I would be interested in your reaction.

The eyebrows: are fairly stable I hope, usually inclined upwards at 20 degrees of arc or 0.35 radians from the horizontal.

No change there, so far. 😉

Live long and prosper.

Hey, Prashna !
This is actually the third time I've tried to write this reply...the other 2 attempts disappeared into cyberspace...much to my frustration ! Thanks for your gracious reply :

I read your posts from 7 months ago with great interest...I especially enjoyed the following quotes from the Upanishads:

Mundaka Upanishad 2:2 esp 2:2:4-6
“The Syllable aum~ is the bow: one’s self is the arrow. Brahman is the target. It is to be hit with unerring accuracy.. Thus one becomes united with it as the arrow becomes one with the target.” That faultless aim, aum~ will ensure.

- Taittiriya Upanishad Part 1 Chapter 8.
“aum~” is Brahman. “aum~” is all this.

He who utters “aum~” with the intention ‘I shall attain Brahman’ does attain Brahman.”

I felt that these exerpts are clear and inspirational in their illustration of the concept and meaning of what is a very complex idea. I am familiar with the idea of the trifold nature of Aum, where A=Brahma; U=Vishna; M=Shiva, and think that this is the macrocosm, to the microcosmic:

the "a" can be felt as a vibration that manifests itself near the navel or abdomen, symbolising Creation.
the "u" can be felt vibrating the chest, represents Preservation (the lungs sustain or preserve the body through breath); and
the "m" vibrates the cranium or the head, representing Destruction, since all that one renounces is first destroyed mentally.
The pause of reflection is silent, because it represents the Absolute, without qualities or form, Indescribable and unutterable. For convenience, I have assigned it the symbol ~.

Hence, the entire cycle of the cosmos and all it contains is said to be symbolised in aum~.

Your request for my reaction? Well, it reads as a masterclass to the layman such as myself...I think the posts are inspirational, but that they would go over most people's heads. This should not deter you from imparting this knowledge, as, and I can only speak for myself, there is always fertile soil for these seeds to take root ! Very illuminating !!

I have had limited success with Yoga, which would include Pranayama and Dharana, which I've practiced in a " hamfisted " Western way, on and off, for the past 20 years !! Lol...Also, I think I've had some experience with the premature awakening of Kundalini...some of this experience has been less than pleasant !

For these past 5 years, I have been attuned to Reiki also, and have tottered along some sort of Spiritual Path of my own as a result of these, and several other mix and match philosophies/religions. However, they have become fundamental to my own personal journey of awakening, which, for all their likeness to a patchwork quilt...Lol...have succeeded in helping me to grow as a person, and as a spiritual being...allbeit in a very slow and gradual upward spiral...

I would be very happy to have further discussions with you on the subject of Hinduism...or any other subject for that matter !

...and of course, Star Trek !!

Peace.

:037: Fascinating! :037:

Hi Nev, :speechless-smiley-0

For accuracy in response and appropriate direction, I have taken the liberty to number your most encouraging post as I perceive it. I hope you don't mind!

1. The Mundaka (At the feet of the Monk) and the Taiittiriya (From the Taittriya branch) are two of the most significant Upanishads, which I believe are central to your strivings. But that is not directly on-topic to this thread. So I shall deal with that in the so-called "Hinduism" section of HP.

2. ...as they do over mine! The day when I fully realise what I have written is the day when I shall be free from the limitations of the human form. But that cannot and must not stop me from trying!

I am so happy that you are trying too! We have this rare opportunity to realise the Infinite, each in our different way, all of which are valid.

3. Pranayama and Dharana are good. I believe that they would lead you directly to full realisation, if you persist long enough.

You mentioned Kundalini. I have avoided that with extreme care. You see, power without control is extremely destructive and ultimately, for obvious reasons, self-destructive. This is what Purana after Purana in Sanatana Dharma illustrates. Unfortunately most observers have misunderstood the central message and used the Puranas to ridicule and denigrate Sanatana Dharma.

The Upanishads show the way to the control. Arouse Kundalini without that knowledge and I believe, you will destroy yourself.

4. The longest innings still start with a single run, as you must have realised with the recent win of England over India, in the one-day series.

I am happy that you have, at least, begun your innings. The half-century will come and the century and the double after that! If you strive!

Who knows! you might even establish a new record.

Only to be broken by the next Batsman, of course!

5. You are most welcome. To the extent that I have been fortunate in achieving the limited realisation that I have, I shall be delighted to help.

If a particular question is not suited to raise as a public thread, you can always PM me. I shall try to answer as best as I can.

6. Now, THAT is different!

VULCAN is my home planet!

KOHL-I-NAAR is what I hope to achieve one day! Or one night!
Is there a difference?

Here is my favourite picture from Star Trek.
