Hi all,

I sufferedreally badpain and discomfort caused by Symphysis Pubis Dysfunctionwhen pregnant with my son. The last 4 months of my pregnancy were agony ~ walking up stairs ~ turning over in bed ~ getting out a chair ~ even just sitting still. The pain was concentrated on the left side and didn't really ease off till my son was 6 months old. The midwifes and docs told me it was all part of pregnancy !! I wasn't offered any physio during my pregnancy or after the birth.

So my son is now nearly 3 and I still get the pains for a few days prior to menstruating !! (must be to do with the hormones) Just wondered if anyone knows ofany tips or exercises I could do to help with this ???

Thanks guys

Hi,

If the pubis symphsis has not settled I would be inclined to go and see an osteopath to have the problem sorted.

Hope this helps

I have had some experience with clients who have this.

Do you get constipated and have to strain pre-menstrually? This could be a cause - the pelvic floor pulls on the pubis and makes the area sore. It's most important that everything flows!

Treat it with ice.

Avoid wide legged positions (sitting cross-legged for instance).

A remedial exercise is to squeeze the inner thighs - you want the muscles around the area to be pretty strong.

Also pelvic floor exercises and plenty of them, done correctly, will help.

Sharon.

RE: Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction ??

Hi,
I too suffered with all 3 of my pregnancies, but once the babies were born I was ok. My youngest is now 9, and I have started experiencing tenderness when I run.(I have been running now for the last 4-5 years) I have been to an osteopath, who told me to log when it hurts more. Apparently it can be closely linked to hormones, so when your period is due try not to aggravate it in any way. For me, this would be running, but also sitting crossed legged, or putting any strain on the area.

I was also examined, and she found my hips are out of line slightly, not alot but enough to cause the bone to grate together (ouch!!). She advised me to strengthen my 'core' muscles, so my back and tummy, and pelvic floor, and inner thighs. Pilates would be a great form of excercise for you. I am very good at doing the excercises for a while but then forget!!

I would visit an osteopath if I were you and get your hips checked out!!

Good luck!

Tj

Hi Meridianmoon,

It's not nice!! But it can be helped!! Lots of pelvic floor excercises! I was told to try stopping mid wee, then going again. I found this really difficult at first, but Im getting better now!!

Good luck!!

Tj;)

RE: Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction ??

I am in my 4th pregnancy and have had SPD during the last 3. I ended up on crutches for 1 month after the birth of my 2nd child and I was in a lot of pain in my sacroiliac joints for about 8 months afterwards. This was due to a poor delivery position and no understanding of my condition and poor aftercare. After continual physiotherapy exercises and a lot of walking the pain gradually resolved with occasional bouts which I could usually attribute to something I had done e.g. lifting etc.
I had been doing well in this pregnancy until week 29, then I the pain hit and it was disabling. I couldn't sleep because as soon as I lay in bed I could hardly move a muscle without pain. I couldn't get out of bed without the symphysis pubis joint cracking loudly. One joint seemed to overlap the other while lying down and would lock me in the one position so I couldn't sleep and I couldn't get up. However 2 days ago I tried polarity therapy with my husband as my partner. I don't know if it is coincidence or not but the pain has been considerably reduced over the 2 days and I can lie down and change position in bed. I suggest trying the following method fromElizabeth Noble in "Essential Exercises for the Childbearing Year":
"The connective tissue uniting both pubic bones becomes softer during pregnancy and the increased mobility at this joint may become painful. No muscles span this joint, therefore no specific exercises can be done to protect it. In fact, Exercise usually makes the condition worse, especially moving one leg. Keep your thighs parallel during exercises and rolling in or out of bed. A diagnostic test is to get on your hands and knees and raise on e leg off the floor.if this does not aggravate the PS symptoms at the center of your vulnerable midline, you may have adductor tendonitis or round ligament spasm, the discomfort of which is felt on one side. Treatment: Local polarity therapy. Position: Lying on your side, a partner places all five fingertips firmly at the union of your pubic bones, and the other hand rests flat on your sacrum. The hands should remain still on these two points until warmth, tingling, vibration, pulsing or other evidence of your body's electric field can be felt equally in both of your partner's hands. Usually one or two treatments is necessary. I have successfully used polarity balancing to treat painful PS laxity for fifteen years."
