Does anyone have any experience of or dealing with the symptoms of PMDD (premenstrual dysmorphic disorder). I found a mention of it on FB Mental Health page and reading through one ladies experience of this disorder lit a huge lightbulb in my head.

I have previously experienced huge mood swings cyclic with my monthly periods, the Dr's haven't really taken me seriously so I went to see them during one of my episodes to convince them to put me on anti-depressants, which have been working to an extent. Obviously I don't want to be on these forever and now I think I've found the name of what I've been going through I'm hoping that I can identify the most appropriate way to alleviate the symptoms until I am at the age of menopause.

The daughter of a friend of mine has just been diagnosed with this. There is a hormonal treatment available which is really helping her But you need to find a gynaecologist who understand the problem. . Hysterectomy is also an option but that is rather drastic. However if the symptoms are bad enough it may be worthwhile.

Anti depressants will work to an extent - but unless you deal wit the underlying hormonal issue you will still have the problem

Thank you for your reply.

My predicament is that my GP's have so far been no help what so ever and I've had to lie to get the anti-depressants to take the edge off.

I totally agree that the underlying hormonal issue needs to be sorted but when the GP just offers me the pill as the way of dealing with it and another GP telling me getting pregnant would probably solve the issue too, neither of which are sensible and just winds me up.

I've seen several gynocologists, each has had their registrar talk to me and then discharged me from treatment. So given up trying to get referred, even though I know things are just not right.

I'm currently taking Feverfew on the week run up to my period which I have found does indeed help with some of the symptoms and I've been reading that increasing my Magnesium intake and B6-12 will help also, so think I will give those a try now.

Pregnancy wouldn't solve it. My friend has a 2 year old - and she had dreadful Post Natal depression - and she still had the PMDD

No I didn't think that was a sensible response. lol...

Bless your friend for going through this, I really sympathise with her as it isn't nice at all. I hope the treatment she's getting continues to work well.

I will continue my research and see what is suggested, may as well trial and error until I get the right balance for me.
