Hi All!

Im new to the site and looking for a bit of advice.

Basically i've stopped having periods and im starting to get worried. Im 22 years old, 5ft 6 and 9st, and ive been on the pill for 8 years.

Up until last year i was on Microgynon 30 with no issues whatsoever, then around April / May time i didn't have a period, i started to worry that maybe i was pregnant so i took a pregnancy test, which was negative, so was the one the month after!

After a couple of months i made an appointment to see my doctor about not having any periods, he said this was normal and i was worrying over nothing, he said most women with heavy periods would die to be in my position.

Another couple of months and still no periods so this time i went to see a different doctor who told me to take norethisterone alongside my pill for the last 10 days before my break and this should force a period..........BINGO! But the month after i was back in the same situation no period!

I went to see the first doctor again who still couldnt see what my issue was but after some persuasion said he would change my pill to Loestrin 30 as it has more progestrogen, i was to not have a break and start taking this straight after i finished my pack of Microgynon, and hopefully at the end of taking the Loestrin i should get a period.............WRONG!

So i did my 3 months on this and went back to the doctors again, this time i asked to speak to the second doctor as he had seemed more reasonable, but he just said that if the Loestrin is not working i should try Cilest, which is what i am on now.

Im really starting to get a little worried that something could be wrong with me but i dont really know what to do right now as the doctors just seem to send me away. Am i being unreasonable to request that some tests are done to see if there are any underlying issues?

Also on top of all this its costing me a fortune in pregnancy tests right now!

I am hoping to try for a baby after my wedding next year but feel so confused and worried that i may have fertility problems, any advice?

Im sorry for the essay, but any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Jodi

I don't really have advice but thought I would tell you that I was in the same position 30 years ago. Like you I was much more concerned than the GP and kept going back looking for answer. Eventually after nearly 12 months without a period I was sent for tests - I had to collect a full 24 hours of urine each week and drop it in for testing!! That was fun as you can imagine . Eventually after a few months of collecting and testing I was informed that I had a hormone imbalance and advised to avoid the pill for contraception.

I am glad I forced the issue and managed to get the tests done as I was concerned about getting pregnant and not even knowing I was pregnant for months. I didn't get any treatment and my periods came back within a few months of the results and I haven't had any hormonal problems since then.

Good luck with getting an answer from your GP.

Hi- what really strikes me about this, is that whilst gps might prescribe all these pills at the drop of a hat,the medicines are all 'playing around' with-or distorting-your natural hormonal balance and so I don't think you can really tell what's going on, wthout stopping all hormonal preparations and allowing your body to function naturally. I know from a contraceptive viewpoint, this is inconvenient.....but it's the obvious answer- and if you do want to conceive in the near future, it might be good to know that your periods are in fact coming nomally. Hi jodi,
I was in the same position as you 20 years ago. I came off the pill after 9 years to try for a family and never had a period for 5 years, we had a lot of tests and were told there was no reason why we should not have children ....once my ovaries started to work again! They did an ovarian biopsy and it showed that my ovaries had stopped working, which was what the pill does to stop you getting pregnant as it makes your body think you already are...so I am told. Anyway what I want to say to you is stay off the pill if you can and hopefully, as happened with me, eventually your natural pattern of periods will return and you will have no problems concieving if thats what is meant to be. We now have 3 sons.
