Hello all, hope we are all well, I know similar threads will have been done re this, but does anyone else find smears really uncomfy? I have had one today & felt a complete wuss:( as it was much more painful than the last one I had 3 years ago. I just cant seem to relax & I tense up which obviously makes the whole thing much worse than it should be:( The nurse is fab who does it & she has been at the practice for years, but I feel really embarrassed that it was so uncomfy, I know I shouldnt, but I do, still at least it done with for another 3 years(fingers crossed) & they are a neccessity, being uncomfy for a couple of mins is a small price to pay to put your mind at rest. Thanks, sorry if i am waffly!:)

I still feel apprehensive when getting one done, I used to cry after them...i just take a few deep breaths now and am thankful that it only lasts a couple of minutes...
the horrible feeling you have now will wear off soon 🙂

They ARE horrible, aren't they? But like the dentist I suppose they have to be endured. And they don't take long. We just have to grin and bear it. But I shouldn't think a single woman would say she enjoys it....

I completely understand! They really aren't pleasant at all - I don't like having them done either!
I am a health psychologist and I have found that a relaxation exercise helps with uncomfortable medical procedures such as smear tests.
When you are on the couch, close your eyes and visualise yourself in a place that you really enjoy being in (could be a beach, for example, or any place where you remember feeling relaxed, calm and content). As you visualise this, feel your body slowly relaxing, muscle by muscle, and slowly you will get to the point where your body will feel all warm and heavy. This will help make the smear less uncomfortable, because you won't be so tense.
It helps to practise this a few times in the days leading up to the test - this will make it easier once you are on the examination couch.
It sounds really daft, but it has worked for me! 🙂

LOL - just re-read this and wanted to edit it (but somehow couldn't) as I see it reads 'single' i.e. unmarried - which is not what I meant! Married women also don't like it. 😎

I used to feel uncomfortable when I was much younger but as I get older I just grin and bear it. Probably after having kids changes you somewhat, its like you have so many people looking up there you lose count. What the heck are they looking for..an on coming train:)
