Hi All,
I have suffered small eczema flare ups from time to time, however I now have a major outbreak above my upper lips and all over my chin. Very embarrassing. I don't know whether it is diet or product related.
So far the GP has provided a 1% Hydrocortizone cream which made it worse and really blister up. I have tried a Urea cream and also an Oat based cream both again made it worse. The only thing that seems to help is a cream made by Simple called Derma Intensive and this gives relief from the itching and burning, but still hasn't sorted out the root cause. I am an aromatherapist and reflexologist and have exhausted both these avenues as well.
Any other sufferers out there or any other advice to help me with this problem.
Thanks in advance.
🙂

hi there
Lack of essential oils (omega-3 and omega-6 oils) have been implicated in eczema. Consuming 1-2grams daily during a flare-up can help reduce the inflammation, reduced once it's under control. I'd also try some vitamin E from a pricked capsule applied to the area may help - it acts as an antioxidant, and oxidation in the inflamed area will be high. A quality multivitamin/multimineral would probably be helpful too, especially with adequate amounts of zinc plus 2-3gms daily in divided doses of vitamin C.
Another implication for eczema is food intolerance and/or allergies - often alleviated by avoiding eggs, milk, and peanuts, but may also include fish, soya, wheat, citrus and chocolate. This can only be proven with an elimination diet, avoiding the potential allergens completely for 2-3 weeks and seeing whether it makes a difference. This would have to be done at a different time from introducing the essential oils, or an allergy and food intolerance blood tests. Avoiding any environmental allergens that bother you will be necessary too - biological washing powders, cleaning detergents, metal against the skin (watch straps and buckles etc), rubber (eg gloves), or anything else that causes you problems.
If you have food allergy/ies then there will be problems with the gut (dysbiosis - meaning it is not functioning as it should). Avoiding the allergens should reduce this, but you will need some supplements to help heal the gut wall and some probiotics to boost good gut bacteria too.
Stress is a primary cause of gut dysbiosis - seek out methods to hellp reduce stress.
You will see that these are options that deal with the root ccause rather than the symptoms. Your best guide through this is with a nutritional therapist, see here for a therapist near you.
Hope this helps
Cutting out caffeine and aspartame based products may alleviate symptoms also.
Do you drink such things as diet coke or similar?

many kinesiologists can help by muscle testing to see what is causing the problem. Find one here:

I've had eczema myself so I have some idea of what you're going through. You have my sympathy

Sounds more like perioral dermatitis to me - i'm familiar with this from when I had roascea and people on the rosacea forum would present with it.
Steroid creams won't help, I'm afraid you'll probably need a course of antibiotics - do a google search: http://www.aocd.org/skin/dermatologic_diseases/perioral_dermatiti.html
Thank you everyone for your help so far, lots to look into and a number of things I haven't considered. I'm very good at advising clients on health issues, but don't often have to seek advice myself. It's great to see the wealth of advice that is out there.
Mikeoc,
Wow, these symptoms match exactly what I have. Looks like I'll have to be paying a visit to the Docs to sort this out. Thank you so much for the link to the website.
Glad to help. Check out the rosacea board I posted a link to, there are people on there that are dealing with this condition, who could probably give you some tips on dealing with it effectively. And let us know how you get on! 🙂
Hi Tranquilmoment, have sent you a PM with another suggestion.
Trying to find what the trigger is for you through trial elimination of foods and products, although taking some time, will be very useful for future. Also have you faced any increase in stress recently, as I know a few peoples whose eczema fares up when they are stressed.
I read high dosage or evening primrose oil helps, also rubbing it the skin. I just read a book on evening primrose oils but it gave no guidance on how much to take, or did I just missed that part.
I also read about aloe vera juice taken internal and externally.
Skin problems
Conventional medicine recognises that skin problems are to do with the nervous system. Treating the surface symptom may do little to help long term in cases which are severe. From a truly holistic perspective, the place to explore with such significant skin problems is the emotional body. Ask yourself, what emotional issues are you ignoring or suppressing? Or maybe long since forgotten about but which are important to you? With skin problems that are very visible, eg on the face, then you can consider that the issue is trying to put itself 'in your face'.
You can work at the energetic level with vibrational medicine, including healing, homeopathy, Bach Flowers, energy work with skilled psychic types, angel therapy (again, beware to work with an experienced therapist who works 'cleanly'), energetic NLP (see energeticNLP.com for free routines). You can work at the emotional level with NLP/Time Line Therapy approaches and/or hypnotherapy.
I think Richard is spot on there in terms of what emotional problems are expressing themselves on your face.
The itching - is someone/something getting under your skin?
Do you worry a lot about what other people think of you, especially physically?
Diet-wise I would try really cutting out dairy, wheat and yeast in particular and avoiding sugar as much as possible.
Good luck!
