This baby of mine don't get to often drink her milk. It will sometimes take about 5 hours before she'll drink and will only drink about 2oz or 3. Currently she's just 12lbs while she is now 4 months old. I'm worried because she has to be weight more that this. is there anything I have to do to make her drink more?
Is she taking water too? Are you breastfeeding? Is she showing signs of distress? Is your health visitor concerned and giving you advice?
My youngest daughter was on baby rice at 4 months - she was hungry all the time - all my friends had been reading books and kept saying "you mustn't give her solids until she is at least 6 months old" - I chose to ignore them, told them my baby couldn't read, so obviously didn't know the rules! I gave her the baby rice, made using my own expressed milk, and within hours she was a happy, content, baby. I continued to breastfeed her myself until her 2nd birthday.
Did you speak with your health visitor? If you are concerned, do take her to your GP.
Is she irascible and cranky or generally unsettled? It is worth getting to any physical, reasons for not feeding
It seems like she is not that fussed about feeding. The reason of which can be investigated. And if there is nothing to worry then just let her do things her way. I am sure she knows what she is doing.
If she is your first born, you are perhaps a worried mum, who worries for her most of the time. That is common. Try not to focus too much on getting everything perfect. Do relax.
Good luck
As Jabba asked, what is your health visitor saying about it.
The trouble is we all get so worried about weight which doesn't do any of us any good, it just adds to everything else we worry about once we have a young baby.
Looking at the charts in my little ones book that would put them on around the 9th centile (is this about right?)
Where did she start?
is she still gaining weight at a steady rate?
just because she isn't very heavy doesn't mean it is a problem, if she is still gaining weight regularly then I am sure she is fine, as long as she is reaching other milestones, seem happy etc then she will be ok.
As the mum of a baby that was classed as 'failure to thrive' I know how worrying it can be.
But quite simply she doesn't have to weigh more than that, some babies weigh more some less this is how we find the averages.
any concerns speak to your health visitor or GP
Get in touch with La Leche or another breastfeeding counsellor. They are well trained and can look at your individual case and either help or tell you not to worry.
Wanda I agree with everything everyone has said. Babies do things in their own time and their own way......If she is happy healthy and the health visitor is not concerned then don't worry, But DO talk to your health visitor.
I believe she is happy, she smiles a lot and she is playful.
However, I worry because she don't drink much milk. the only time I can get her to drink more is when she is sleeping at night because during this time taht I give her 3/4bottle milk and she can take it all.
She's my first baby. Not breastfeed since nothing really comes out ever since. I do hope there is. My doctors say, the baby who is breastfeed is much healthier.
Can i give something like apple juice to her now that she is 4 months old?
yes she drinks water too. is it good for her?
Ah I thought she is your first born.
She is happy. You be happy too.
Breast milk is good, your daughter is healthy too. You can only do what you can.
If you want to supplement her nutrition, banana, apple purée etc are fine. If you have a juicer make it yourself. Then you know she is getting the real thing.
Let your worries rest and see her growing. As long as she is putting on weight and not losing she is doing just fine
