I have an underactive thyroid, diagnosed when I was seven. I just have to take pills every day to manage mine. I used to know a boy when I was younger who had an op to remove his, he's fine.

Not having had an operation myself, I can't really give you any advice, however, it's a pretty common operation so there's no more to worry about than with any invasive surgery. Good luck!!

I would not advise any one to go for a operation but that is my point of view , why not try some holistic treatment ?

Hey Raindrop
Don't worry I have the same problem as you. You see you throid is in the shape of a butterfly and is actually really small. I am not quite sure why but because my thiriod is enlarged in the middle of my neck it makes me look I have an adams apple or something.

I have an underative thriod and have just been put on tablets about 2 weeks ago and If it doesnt go down then I can have an operation. I am only 17 and I have never even broken a bone so I would probs feel quite nervous but just think how good u will feel when its out.

Think about the positive

Take care
x

Hi Raindrop

I have got something very similar to you, I have got a multi-nodular ganglion on my thyroid which has crept across my throat and is very uncomfortable

I am having a CT scan with contrast next week to see if it has gone down below the sternum but it is almost certain that it will be coming out along with my thyroid

would love to know how you are getting on and if you have had an op or not

I'm sitting here waiting to go to the hospital to have part of my thyroid removed due to having a cyst/nodule. Got about 30 minutes before we leave home so wasting time can't do any housework to keep myself busy as I've got to rest. When I went for my pre operation assessment they found that I'd got high blood pressure. So now won't know if the operation is going ahead unless the anaesthetist is happy to proceed which won't be until the last minute.

Had a thyroglossal cyst removed January 2006 so know a certain amount of how I'll feel afterwards and it's not as bad as you think, so don't worry too much girls.

Got home about 4pm today with half a thyroid feeling a bit battered and bruised but feeling really good in myself. My blood pressure was still high before the operation and now it's a lot better although got to go and have it checked at my local surgery in a month's time.

Hi Cis

missed your post before, how are you feeling now, are back up and running? - as you have only had part of your thyroid removed will you have to take thyroxine or will your thyroid still produce enough?

Hi Hemelgirl

Don't think I will be taking thyroxine because one of the nurses said I wouldn't have to have a thyroid function test due to them only taking half of it away. Got my check up in October which I thought was a long time after my operation so if I think I've got a problem will have to see my own doctor. They are going to write to me with the result of wether it was cancer or just a cyst, think really I should be told in person not by letter.

Felt really good when I first got home then the tiredness started to kick in, think I tried to do too much. It's now 2 weeks since my operation and still getting tired easily and the scar is quite sore and tender in places. Some of it could be due to my age and because I had surgery in a similar area before, some people are back at work in 2 weeks.

How did your CT scan go ? Don't worry about the operation it really isn't too bad, I'd do it again if I had to.

PM me if you want and let me know how you get on

Regards Cis

Got the result from my thyroid operation today and it's good news 😀

No sign of cancer, will admit I was a little bit worried that it was

glad to hear that - must be a relief for you

I have had an ultra sound and also a CT and the bad news is that the goitre has gone down behind the sternum and will make it a longer op

now on a waiting list - apparently it should be some time in the New Year

Yes it was Hemelgirl, I've had skin cancer (the nice one not nasty one) so was a bit of a worry.

Sorry to hear about your goitre but at least you now know that it is that and nothing else causing the problem. Surely they could operate before the new year ?. I only waited 4 weeks but that is because of a government ruling that once cancer is mentioned it's classed as ultra urgent.

Let me know how you are getting on and like I said before PM me if you want.

hi rain drop,
how did your doc app go in aug? i had my op in feb 2004 they rushed me in as i was 7 stone at the time and docs didnt diagnose it, only cos my mum had idea what it was we went A and E, had a very fast heart rate because of it, i know they offered me radio active treatment but then suggested i should have op, it took 4 hours so they said, your put to sleep so i shouldnt worry, i felt as bit brused after but for some reason now they stitch from the inside and glue the outside so after nearly 5 years it healing nicely, and ive gone on to have two boys one being 2006 and my second three weeks ago, so someone told me it hard to have kids with thyroid?
im now 9 stone and healthy, i got to see a specialist in new year i live in spain now and they are shocked ive not seen one since i had it out! i guess in uk it just the gp that keeps an eye on you, mine always done a good job but they should monitor you more, i think im on too much at min as i was pregnant before, am on 200mg, but i had whole lot out it does leave a narsty scar but then again i c ouldve died so who cares?
look after yourself x
