Hi guys,

I keep getting swollen ankles, light head/dizzy and very tired all of the time. I can sleep for hours. I even can fall asleep in meetings in work. lol - I am over weight, and have very heavy periods, which last for a week at a time. I've completely cut my salt in take, and walk more.

I haven't been to the doctors for years, I don't like going because as soon as I walk into the room, it's the same old comment about losing weight. I don't over eat, my problem is most probably I don't have enough calories a day.
I was wondering if there is anything natural I can try before going to the doctors?

RE: Swollen ankles

Do the ankles go down overnight? Do you drink water? Do you drink enough water? When you say you probably don't have enough calories in a day - are those calories that you do eat full of nutrition?
You really should get checked out by a medic - and if it is an endocrineimbalance,it could be very easily resolved. Please go see the doc.

RE: Swollen ankles

You do need to see a doctor. Also heavy periods could lead to anaemia, hence tiredness etc,. Swollen ankles shows poor circulation and other potential problems.

If you dont like your doctor see another at the practice. But you DO need to see one.

RE: Swollen ankles

All the symptoms you mention suggest to me an underactive thyroid. I have seen hundreds of people with this problem over the last few years and it has generally responded well to natural treatment. Unfortunately, orthodox medicine rarely seems to detect a moderately underactive thyroid as the appropriate tests are rarely carried out - only a cheaper version that tells very little.
What you really need is an experienced nutritionist with wide experience of endocrine imbalances. The problem is a very common one and it can be helped with proper diet and supplementation.

Hello to everyone. I was directed to this thread after seraching for help with my swollen ankle/foot. It is exacerbated by the hot weather.
My mum takes medication for an underactive thyroid and she suggested I ask to be tested for it after I mentioned that my hair seemed to be thinning.
I have been to several GPs over the years with my ankle to no avail. I've been prescribed water tablets and support bandages. If I wear a bandage it just sends the swelling up to my knee. The last time the doctor sent me straight to A & E as she thought it was DVT. It wasn't.
I take Propanolol, and I was wondering if this could be the cause.
Any advice or suggestions would be gratefully received.
Thanks.

Hello AngelaGB and welcome to HP. I'm sorry to read that you have had this problem with no relief from GP's. I'm not medically qualified but I have a problem with my right ankle swelling and I have been told it could be due to circulatory problems. Do you have varicose veins? If the veins are not functioning properly then it's harder for the blood to be taken back up the leg so 'pools' at the ankles. It's also been suggested that lymphatic drainage might be useful. I haven't followed that up as yet but am keeping it in mind!

I hope more experienced people on HP will be able to offer suggestions for you that might help.

Love and light

Is it just one ankle/foot involved? Do your toes swell? Do you get a spongy-feeling bump on the top of your foot? Anyone in your family suffer from anything similar? MLD (as mentioned by reikiangel might help, and a qualified therapist could advise if you need referral and check the 'bandage' you were given - some are inappropriate and cause more problems!
