hi everyone, i've been treating a client with indian head masssage, he is undergoing treatment for solar keratoses,- Rough scaly spots on sun-damaged skin. They are also known as actinic keratoses. He is using some cream for 4 weeks and then hopefully it will be cleared up, it is only on the face.

i have suggested getting a doctors referal form completed, but he is not keen on this idea, as he thinks the letter will be kept in his case notes, and he doesn't want people what he does or any other aspect of his life, outside his treatment, there is not a lot i can do about this as his feelings have to be respected, but after the 4 weeks are up and the treatment is finished do you think it would be wise for me to carry on the massage treatment, but avoiding the face, or avoid altogether?

your help and advice would be greatly appreciated on this topic.

thanks in advance, for your eyes at least:)

Hi justme,

If in doubt.............don't, thats my motto.
My Indian head tutor told us not to treat anyone with any visible conditions without knowing for sure from their GP it was safe, and, to make sure that they sign a form specifying that they don't have any of the contra-indications to Indian head massage.
Imagine how you will feel if his condition worsens.

Hope this helps

Ok,
You could just leave out the facial, you could also just get him to ask the doctor if its ok, then there is nothing on file and make sure when he signs your form that it says he has verbal agreement from doctor....also you could just say, assuming you are comfortable working on his face that you do not know whether it will make the condition worse and is he happy to go ahead on this knowledge...give your client the power to make his decision.

Would I treat? YES......I am a firm believer that therapies are NOT just for the healthy and there seems to be an awful lot of people who are too afraid of being sued or making situations worse that people who could benefit are actually missing out...

Hi there Tigerbee,

I do agree with you wholeheartedly, that therapy is not just for the healthy, but its unfortunate that we are living in increasingly litigious times and therefore it is in the therapists( and clients) own interest to follow correct precautionary procedure ( try saying that after a couple of glasses of wine)

There have been many an incidence, some mentioned here on HP, of a treatment "going wrong" and the lawyers just revel in it. My husband works for a large firm of lawyers in the North West and the tales he has told me........well..........I just make sure I follow the rule book.

I feel a bit of a party pooper, but thats the way it is.
