I had a deep tissue massage today which REALLY hurt, and now part of my neck on the left side has developed a protruding lump which is tender to the touch!
What is it? [:o]
RE: Please help - lump in neck!
Hi star04
You need to ask the person who gave you the massage and get them to check it out.

Hiya Star04
Interesting, I do deep tissue everyday....in severe cases it can hurt but not usually......I would give the therapist a call, certainly never had any lumps come up! It sounds as maybe you might have some swelling but this is only a guess....did he/she actually work on that area.....

Don't panic!
It's very likely to be muscle spasm,
A) that was there already, but the massage has relaxed the overlying muscles, so you are now able to feel it or
Or
B) if you lay on your front with neck twisted to one side (not using a face whole in the treatment table), then some of the joints in your neck may have locked up, with the muscle spasm that goes with it.
It could be a lymph node that's not draining properly - less likley, but if you think that's the problem, then get someone to look at it. You'll be able to move it about a little if it's a node/gland, whereas a muscle that's premanetly contracted will feel fixed & rigid.
And.

Hiya And....
i certainly have never left a client with a spasm...perish the thought!!!! if there was one originally then even if it was in the deeper layers it would still have been causing a lot of pain before the massage....
hope you neck is feeling much better today Star.....

Hi Tigerbee
It was really painful, very unpleasant. She did work on the neck area, right over where the lump has popped up. It's making that whole side of my neck ache.
I found her very unprofessional - when she'd finished, she just left without saying anything, then came back and said "Er, can you get up now, I've got someone else waiting" !! No offer of water.
She's based in our health department at work, and I will report this to them I think.

It's a very round ball like lump - I phoned NHS Direct and they think it is a lymph node as I've ahd an ear infection and blocked sinuses earlier this week.
They said give it till Monday and if it isn't gone see the doc. It's making the whole side of my neck ache though!
I did tell the masseuse about the ear infection.

doesnt sound like the best treatment you could have had, please dont let it put you off.....

RE: Please help - lump in neck!
I get lots of lumpy lymph in my neck and they are usually related to an infection somewhere - often an insect bite or similar. Maybe she massaged a bite and it became infected?

We're are now talking size of lump & if it's mobile (as above)?
If the whole side of your neck is aching, then it does sound very like local muscle spasm. So, realy please don't worry - it's common stuff!
I don't mean to be rude about NHS direct, but at the end of the day they are nurses trained to consider the worse case senario.
I agree with TigerBee that it does sound like you didnt't get the best treatment and can only repeat the question - were you treated on your front & did the treatment table have a hole to out your face in or did you have to twist your neck to one side?
It will most likely settle down. But, idealy the joint needs to be released.

If it is a lymph node that is that painful, then go back & see your GP.
If it's not, then see my posts above. 😮
If you didn't find your GP to be helpful, then you can usually see a different one in the practice without any problems or see an osteopath & if they find that it is a lymph node that needs further attention, then they can write a note to your GP advising further investigation. 😉
Good luck Andrew.
RE: Please help - lump in neck!
Hi Andrew thanks for reply the lump is not painfull to touch i think the pain in my neck is due to arthitis the lump just wont go away i am going to another gp this week just to ease my mind i am also seeing the breast clinic for a lump there as well think im falling apart do youi think that a lump in your neck is dangerous if it stays there .

RE: Please help - lump in neck!
If you neck is a bit arthritic, then it's probably a lymph node that is congested cos it's trying to drain the waste products of inflammation. So no it's most likely to be 'normal' stuff, but best checked out, even if it's for peace of mind. 🙂
Joints are very reliant on movement for their health & joints that are stiff & not moving will degenerate quicker. So I really would urge you to get those stiff joints in your neck freed off with osteopathic or chiropractic treatment. Yes the dreaded 'click' of the neck. It's rarely painful & having it done is really nothing to be afraid of. The urban myths you may have heard are simply that - myths. [sm=scratchchin.gif]
Also, it will relax the muscles that will be restricting the venous (vein) & lymph drainage, so it may well reduce the lump as well. But do, do any stretches as advised to keep those joints moving. 😉
If they've been stiff for a long time, then your system will think it's normal for them to be stiff, so they need to be convinced otherwise. Also, this will cut down on the number of treatments you'll need. 😉
