How long does it take to eliminate caffeine from the body?

According to one of my text books, between 4 - 6 hours - the liver starts to break it down almost immediately after it is ingested, when it is absorbed into the blood stream and broken down into it's chemical constituents.

Thank you.
My partner has been advised to cut out caffeine in case her constant headache is migraine-related. She's cut it out now for over a week and there has been no lessening of pain. Can we assume the culprit isn't caffeine? We are pretty certain that it isn't migraine-related at all, but the doctors like to check one thing at a time.

She could be suffering withdrawal symptoms from the caffeine.....but if the headaches are the only symptom she the chances are its not. But after a week the caffeine should be cleared out totally. In fact it would have been cleared after 3 days...

The half life is 4-6 hours.....it takes 5 half lives to eliminate a drug from the body

🙂

Thank you for this.
No, the headaches are not caffeine withdrawal - the migraine link was just a wild idea the doctor had. She had a brain tumour removed just over three years ago and has had pain ever since - and lack of balance and several things that are affecting her executive functions. We're working our way through different diagnoses.

So would that mean 25 hours?

The half life of 4-6 hours is actually vary variable. In premature babies the half life is about a day.

my 3 day suggestion was allowing for slow metabolism ...but in an average person 36 hours would normally be ample...
