I thought I was seeing things when I read this topic heading - I felt sure that this procedure had gone out of vogue! My mother had it done in the early 60's and said it was the most humiliating thing she had ever gone through. I have just had a quick google, and it appears to be less onerous nowadays. She went through it to find out what was causing her severe constipation. It was found, 20 years later, that all her problems were related to psychological problems, brought on during the second world war - there was no loo in their air-raid shelter, and she refused to use the bucket provided in front of her family and neighbours. Once her "post-traumatic stress" was sorted out (not until the early 70's) the anal sphincter dystonia disappeared!

Dear Barb,

Please don't worry..the more you tense by worrying the harder the process of this type of examination will be due to clentching..try to relax..

My aunty had this done some time ago.. and NHS no longer use those horrid proctoscope..they are used by inserting it in to our back side to examin or help expel unwanted waste..
These days they use far more flexible , smaller and much more comfortable sigmoidoscope .

I am sure they wouldn't mind you taking the time to ask any questions before you allow them to do the test.. this way you'll be able to clear any questions , concerns and dubts about it ...worse comes to worse, you can ask them for an alternative instead!

I wish you well Barb!

with warm wishes
Vathani

Dear Vathani,
Cheers for your reply, I have been `Googling` my Proctogram, and have seen that patients sit on a Commode to expel the Barium. I looked on the leaflet I got with my appointment, and it says I will be laying down! I rang the Hospital and yes, I will be laying down! I dont think I will be able to do the `required` action, in the laying down position. The Nurse at the Hospital was very nice and took time to talk me through my procedure, I know that they do it everyday, and are specially trained, etc, etc, but there is only one of me and to say I am absolutely petrified, is an understatement!

Barb. x

Hello Barb

At the risk of being a bore - may I suggest you try EFT for your fear of the process? You can find some stories about others whose fear has been allayed using this method and you can find a practitioner [DLMURL="http://www.aamet.org/search/filter-members/eft-advanced-practitioners.html"]here[/DLMURL].

In fact you'll find it is a pretty simple virtually painless process (with a ridiculously frightening name to make it sound important) and after it's over you'll wonder what all the panic was about. 🙂

Hi
I have to have one in a few weeks time and am also dreading it. They are doing it to look for an internal rectal prolapse.
