Hi Atlanticpearl,

I have been going to a chiropractor paid for by myself not through the NHS.....he has worked marvels. Two weeks ago I could literally hardly walk, by the end of the second session I was touching my toes...:).

The sessions were 10 mins at the most, he knows exactly where to press the trigger points in the muscles/nerves, where to wring out the muscles and where to bang on the bones for release....

I used a chiro for my sciatica a few years ago, and I too would highly recommend them.:045: It was such a relief after struggling with it for months and months. Best money I ever spent.:)

Hi

Any form of bodywork (including chiropractic) can protentially help to resolve sciatica. Of all the musculoskeletal disorders I treat, I would say that sciatica is one of the easest to sort out. Why people suffer for years with sciatica and don't have it treated, I have know idea.

Best Wishes

I agree with RP. Sciatica is impingement (squishing) of the sciatic nerve that runs through each buttock. Relax the muscles in the area via some form of bodywork and the problem can be resolved relatively easily (on the condition there's nothing more serious).

I had a client who ended up with sciatica due to dental crown work. The change in bite, created tension in the jaw that then went into her neck, shoulders then down into her lower back then took up residence in her buttocks. The work I did on her was specific and targeted the tense areas then released the jaw and no more pain.

I hope this helps.

Cheers, Sue

I had sciatica during every pregnancy ... had to be very careful of posture as a result. Yoga helps dramatically.

In terms of massage therapy (or something similar), is it more difficult to treat nerve impingements (trapped nerves, muscle spasms) that have been around for longer (say months) than more recent conditions (say weeks)?

Sorry Jim I don't agree with you, even long term sufferers can improve with skillful massage within a short period of time. Massage is a good way of reducing the spastic muscles.

Hi everyone thanks for the info. My mother cant have massage due to a lot of health problems she has RA and OA, also other conditions and was always told by the Arthritis specialist never to have anyone do massage because it could do more damage than good. At the moment the doctor has prescribed temgesic drug which is helping with the pain...but it sends her to sleep a lot!!!

Hi AP

How about then Reiki-ing her. Hand positions on either the buttock, sacrum, down the back (posterior) or outside (lateral) sides of the leg and around the heel/ankle area.

Best Wishes

RP, I think you missed the question mark in my post 😉

Anyway, thanks for the answer. That's what I wanted to know because I have a painful trapped nerve that's been with me for about 4 months. (tried deep tissue massage but it was excrutiating)

Hi AP, one the great things about reiki is that you can often use it when other therapies may be inappropiate.

Hi Jim, yes you are right I did miss the ? mark. You are spot on! Anycase, eventhough I think deep tissue techniques are wonderful, my treatment philosophy is: a bit of tension is fine but pain is no gain! There is also pressure/trigger points in the calfs and around the ankle that can be used if the lowerback/buttock area is too tense. I treated a sciatica client today with massage and acupuncture. Her hamstrings were too tight for deep tissue work, so I massaged the calf instead to release the hamstrings, which worked. Then acupunctured local and distal point to reinforce the treatment. She has had this problem for years, but I'm confident that it will shift.

Best Wishes

Hi RP 🙂

The chiropractor I was seeing is a way now for a few weeks, so my treatment has drawn to a conclusion. Although he has worked great guns...I know there is still a little "kink" in there,,, as I can feel the tension down my back right leg.

Is there any self help treatment you could recommend, bearing in mind I cannot reach my own, back leg and coccyx area . I am to level 2 reiki BTW, although lacking in confidence with it....(long boring story)

Hi Fleur

Considering that I can't assess you in person, if you feel tension along the back of the leg, then do gentle but regular stretches, ie forward bends. In Qigong we say don't do anything that pushes the body more than 70%, then you will be safe.

You can Reiki appropriate reflex points on your hands, or even send yourself Reiki distant healing. Reiki a crystal (can't remember if it should be fossilised wood or tigers eye - help someone please) and stick it is your pocket of the side that is a problem. The more you do the confident you will become!

Best Wishes

RP
