Hi,
Can someone please enlighten me as to what scar tissue is and how it can cause post op problems?
From what I gather, for the majority of microdiscectomies, only the superficial layer of skin is cut and other muscles are retracted. A tiny ligament beneath the lamina is cut and if the nerves to not get damaged intra operarively (this shoild be evident right after the surgery), there should be no further scarring. Sfar tissue is inevitable at the incision site but since the disc and nerves are quite far from that, how would that scar tussue cause future problems, like some people seem to suggest. Surely thay top layer of skin can't cause nerve or other kinds of pressure.
Please let me know because I hear this all the time and I don't know what people mean.
Hiya Hopehasgone!
As you say, scarring is a normal ‘after effect’ of spinal operations. Any body part area that is cut, dissected, retracted and accidentally damaged, almost certainly will produce ’pain and non-pain’ producing scar tissue.
The minimal amount of cutting, dissecting or stretching, by virtue of it’s ‘less invasive nature’ must I believe, be more likely to offer a better long term clinical outcome!
Less cutting, less damage, less scaring, simples!!
