Hi All
I have been recommended to try the RACZ procedure after two attempts at nerve blocks have failed. My problem is that after 2 operations I have scar tissue which has developed around the nerves in the spine. I believe the RACZ procedure is an attempt to try and relieve some of the symptoms that are causing me problems like having difficulty in walking etc.
My question is has anyone else had this procedure done on them and was it successful. My concerns is that it is not recognised by BUPA so I have to get it done on the NHS which is a worry in itself. However my consultant says that it is a good procedure and has had many success's with it.
Thanks
Chris

Hi Chris
did the consultant help you with any written information or guide you to any research that backs him up ?
Getting a second opinion from another surgeon may also help you decide if this may be a good proceedure for you.

RACZ catheter procedure can be dangerous. Most of spine surgeons have abandoned this procedure because it is not effective enough.
Endoscopic procedures can help to remove scar tissue under direct visualization!
RACZ procedure is blind!
Thank you for the replies, the procedure is being performed by a pain management consultant who is on referal from a back surgeon. As previously stated the nerve blocks didnt work so I feel I am cutting down my options so far and that the RACZ is worth a try as I dont think there are many options left.
They dont want to do any surgical procedures as of yet due to the complications that can arise and also I have been told if you cut scar tissue the end result is more scar tissue.
I was hoping that someone had had this procedure previously and could say yes it worked for me, however I have to realise that each individual is different.
I looked into this and found two things, first for me and the bulging disc it probably wouldn't help the nerve pain, and two, that because the discs are very thin it may not stop the foraminal and facet problems as it does not heighten or plump up the disc in any noticeable way?
However MK does use a similar technique with a laser to try and seal ruptures during another operation.
Research it well then decide 🙂
You are right Cascara. Professor Racz catheter is not used for herniated discs. Its used to treat scar tissue and adhessions.
Dr. Knights procedures are not even similar to Professor Racz's.
