Hello Everyone

I had a Microdiscectomy for L5/S1 (right) slipped disc about 3-4 months ago. Since then my right leg pain has been fixed, but i still get pain at my lower back (around sacro area and on the side of my hips). My back surgeon wanted me to see a hip person (which i saw today) to find out if he thought i had a hip issue (as it aches around my hips) - if not then its still my back. Well the hip man earlier said that my hips are ok and he still believes its my back. He said the hip pain could be referred from my back. So he is going to organise another MRI scan of my back/pelvis. I guess what i wanted to ask is does anyone else get the following symptoms even though you have had the operation? I am concerned i might have an issue with my left side now (right was the operation). I am also worried that they may find nothing wrong. He said i could also go to a pain clinic if we don't get anywhere.

Symptoms =

  • painful lower back - sacro area
  • pain in back at night - especially turning over at night
  • general ache when sat and uncomfortable in a car
  • the occasional sharp pain (i get this on and off in my left buttock)
  • referred pain in hip area and hip aches to walk sometimes
  • My back pain is worse if i do a lot during the day

Thanks, Emma (30)

Hi Emma

Get them to scan your SI joints, I have similar symptoms after two level fusion two years ago and have just been told I have severe degeneration of my SI joints. If you look up SI joint on line you will see the list of symptoms problems with them cause.

Do you think the MRI scan i will have would show up any SI problems?

Hi Emma

No unfortunately it has to be specially requested to have the Si joints scanned. I have had about 7-8 previous MRIs and none of them covered this area.
