Hi all. I have had an MRI as pain in hamstring and calf and sometimes pins and needles in foot in the morning . This showed a disc protrusion . I saw an orthopedic surgeon .

He gave me options of physio , injection or surgery. This was in October . Physio has given me basic exercises. I do mckenzie exercises and they def help.

My gp has me on gabapentin and if pain in muscles bad co codamol. Pain hS been with me since about end of sept .

My gp says theses things heal and keep waiting. I'm now looking at the surgery but I know three people who have had it and Are not happy. Has anybody heard of these healing and if do how long did it take for you.

I'm iff work as sitting is really bad at times. My gp and physio said that even though I have a protrusion if might not be causing the pain could be muscle imbalance

I'm so confused . Found thus forum and it's helping

All the best to you all

Mark

Hi Mark these things CAN heal. Have you considered going to an osteopath or chiropracter? That tends to be my first point of call if I get back problems. However surgery can have remarkably good effects .....I had it done nearly 20 years ago and have been fine since then.

Good luck

Hi thanks for the reply and great to hear that you are the other side of surgery as I'm petrified of it. I've not been to a chiro or osteopath at all only because the surgeon said was a waste of time but I'm not so sure.

I have heard good things about IDD therapy and not so good things about injections

Getting down about the whole thing really and I need to try and find a solution.

I see my gp again in a week so will have a chat.

Thanks again really appreciate you replying

Any idea what a good waiting time for healing is before the surgery route ?

Have you had anything done yet? I'm now 6 weeks post surgery and it's the best thing I've ever done. The recovery is frustrating as you have to think about everything you do but to be free of the pain from 2 years of it is bliss.

For some reason I've only just seen your above reply to me Mark. So I imagine by now you have seen your GP and I hope you have got some answers. I am surprised yoru GP is so dismissive of osteopathy. Many physios also offer osteopathy because its value si well recognised. Personally I found chiropractic less helpful.........but I know of people who swear by it.

But if YOU feel it is worth stepping outside the NHS then there is a little mantra to remember...your body your choice. Sadly the NHS is very bad at dealing with back problems. That is what I was told by my neurosurgeon when I had my op 20 years ago....

The waiting list for surgery will vary locally and depends on how bad YOU are.

Do update us on how things are
