RE: Fragile x syndrome

Hi there

My friend has a 10 year old son with Fragile x. It is more common that we realise. My own little boy who is 2 was seen by doctors and as he has very little speech (he is just being lazy!) they assume he has Fragile X and wants him to go for tests. I refused!

I know what Fragile X is about and my son does not have this. Some doctors just scare you don't they. I know they want to rule this out but I think he is just not talking because he does not want to ! Some adults are quiet with talking why not a child! Automatically a doctor will put something medical to everyone going!

He is just a quiet little boy who enjoys life to the full and very affectionate.

Interesting subject though.

RE: Fragile x syndrome

Hi there, thanks for the reply... I was extremely concerned when my boy hadnt spoken a word by 2 1/2 yrs of age..I was happy to take the test and i am so glad i did.. My son obviously doesnt understand what it is but i now do and my 11 yr old daughter is getting to know more and more each day about fragile x syndrome. I had never heard of it until my son was born 5 yrs ago.And there are many parents who have not heard of it . My daughter was a late walker and talker but i was assured there was no problem at all...... Turns out i am a carrier as is my 15yr old daughter and my wee boy and his sister both have full blown fragile x.. I am gladwe alltook the test as it is important for the kids to know why they are different. And obviously they will have a lot to consider when they have children of their own, as it is a genetic disorder and is passed down the generations...It put my mind to rest knowing exactly why my kids couldnt talk properly and why they were having problems at school. My daughter has struggled through a mainstream educationbut because we have all been diagnosed my son will now get the schooling he needs and life shouldnt be quite as tough for him...

Kids all vary we all know that, but if the specialists aretalking to you about having this harmless test done, then shouldnt that be enough cause for concern? I would as others would, rather find out now than later...

Take Care
