hello ,
Can someone please give me some advise for allergies. I am suffering badly! Heres whats been going on.. last feb of 08 i satrted having breathing problems . Through out the course of a year I got worse and worse. Seeking medical help they focued on Asthma . I didnt get better but bottom line is I was diagnosed with having severe allergies 2 months ago . Im in United States. I have severe attacks where I cannot breath at all and only a rescue breathing machine (nebulizer) will help me and if im not near that when it happens Im in DEEP trouble. The breathing gets so bad when these attacks occur I wanted to call for emergency assistance and couldnt because my phone was 10 feet from me and I was in fear of moving because we use more air moving around. I am allergic to rodents (removed from home).. I have snakes before anyone would wonder why I have them. and several trees, weeds, and mold. Dust mites. I have bought new cover for bed new allergy free pillows . I dont have carpet as main flooring in the home but do have some in hallway and on stairways. I am not having ANY relief . I am on 2 inhalers one being a rescue inhaler more than 10-15 times per day and a dual inhaler with a steriod in it I use 2x per day as prescribed . I have done all I can think of to improve my home so please any advise is greatly appreciated . WHat makes this 10x worse is I am also a Pain clinic person. I take high doses of pain pills from a failed back surgery I had back in 2003 so If I cannot move around I cannot do any sort of activiity which intun places me in far more pain than I already have to deal with. I am starting Injections Thursday for cats and dogs . I have cats and my dr told me I didnt have to remove them as we are going to try allergy shots . I am desperate for help . My breathing has been bad for a year now . I do want to point out one thing .. When i went to Dr last week I satyed out of the home for 4yrs I had MAJOR improvement with my lungs so its clearly my house thats killing me . Also I dont have any of the usual allergy symptoms such as itchy , watery eyes etc its all directly to my lungs.:(

Have you tried ionisers?

I understand that asthma is one of the possible side effects of taking pharmaceutical painkillers. I'm wondering if that might be a factor in all this?

Good point, I was going to say that many drugs can have an effect on the respiratory system, as well as doing the job they are taken to do. Read the info leaflet that comes with your meds and see what the known side effect are. It should also give a list of the lesser known side effects. You could always discuss this with your doc, try some different drugs and see if the situation improves.
Air fresheners and domestic cleaning products can also trigger respiratory/breathing problems.
Good luck!

Hello..
Thanks for the replies . I've been on pain meds for the last 5years. To be more specific im on Methadone 60mg per day for pain and Roxicodone 90mg . These drugs can cause resp. issues if taken too many (OD) it says . also where I have been on them so long I would ? that . I did have major improvement when I left my house for 4hrs . By the way whats an Ioniser? Have no idea what it is. I also changed my cleaning products and went "green" as thats crossed my mind , especially since I was a heavy bleach user including washing my dishes in hot soay water with bleach added. However everything I have done has always been the same . I cannot change drugs thats not an option because thats what works for me pain wise , I have already been thru the years of being on Oxycontin and morphine and stuff like that . Methadone is by far not only one of the oldest drugs on the market but indeed one of the best pain relievers in that class. I appreciate the advise you both had taken the time to write. I have no idea what an Ioniser is so if you could let me i'd appreciate that. Thanks again and best wishes

Basically an ioniser is an air purifier, and they're very good for people like you who are suffering from allergies. I would strongly advise you get one, just a basic model to start with, and see how you get on. Might be the answer to your prayers?

I am not an expert on allergies but in terms of comp.therapies TAT (Tapas Acupressure Technique) is supposed to be very good for a wide range of allergies and sensitivities - you can download a free manual from Tapas Fleming's website (can't remember the web address but you can google it). In a way an allergy can be seen as a "phobic reaction" of our immune system to a (relatively) harmless stimulus and some practitioners who work with mind-body therapies use the same approaches to treat allergies as they apply to working with psychological trauma and phobias, but as I said, my experience in this area is limited, so don't take my word for it!

Hello
Allergies can make life a misery, I know. It is a very complex subject as it involves so many possible factors. Your long time necessity for painkillers may also have upset your body's ability to produce digestive enzymes, in which case the contents of the gut are chemically different from when they are properly digested, allowing unnatural (more toxic) bacteria to flourish. This upsets/damages the lining of the gut wall, where 80% of your immune system is located, upregulating it to a state of constant alert/panic and overproduction of histamine to neutralise that 'enemy' - whatever it is perceived to be by your immune system. Often it is something you are in contact with daily (including foods) and could be multiple things, internal or external.
- TAT, as suggested by Masha, could certainly help downregulate the reactions.
- Vitamin C, calcium and magnesium seem to make a difference and reduce the severity of allergic reactions - but you must check with your healthcare provider before taking them in case they interact with your medication. Vit C alone helps, up to 2g/day in divided doses - but start slowly, half a gram on the 1st day (divided doses), then upping gradually - depending on your tolerances. Too much causes loose stools! reduce dose if that happens. I found it brilliant!
- Bromelain, a pineapple extract, has proved useful for both helping with digestion of foods and reducing pain - worth a try.
- L-glutamine can help heal the gut - again check with interactions - it's the main protein fuel for rebuilding the cells that line the gut.
- But a good home remedy for upset digestive system is rice water: - boil a cupful of brown rice in your largest saucepan full of water for an hour - discard the rice or use elsewhere - drink the water while warm, flavoured if you like - soooo soothing (useful for all digestive upsets). Looks like walpaper glue but does the trick!
Unfortunately pharmaceuticals, though necessary at times can extract a high price in side effects.

Masha - wouldn't it be helpful for this lady to try EFT for her pain too? - to reduce the need for so much medication?

My thoughts are with you, Snakelady - any chance of seeing a nutritionist?
C

Hello Snakelady

Why not move out of the house that's clearly got something to do with your 'allergy'? Are you house-bound because of your physical ailments? Physical dis-ease and discomfort are a reflection of what's going on, on the inside. Back trouble - have a look at the 'load' you are carrying in life, not just physical, but mentally and emotionally too. Let go of what is weighing you down. Breathing problems are associated with not fully choosing life. When your energy gets stuck there is no flow of life in grace and synchronicity. Life becomes a pain in the back. You become allergic to life.

Move and shake up that energy (physically, mentally, emotionally) so new potentials can flow in. Try outdoors for some fresh air too... perhaps get out in nature a bit, sure it will do wonders for you.

Love
BRose

Hi snake lady,
I've just read you're post and I sympathise greatly. My son is full of allergies and has been since he got savagely attacked by a dog when he was eighteen months. He never had a problem until then.It bought on severe eczema and asthma and I was at my witts end after seeing various dermatologists and allergy specialists .They did tests and cats and dogs where the top culprits its not necessarily there fur but the dander they carry on it also when they wash themselves the saliva produces loads of tiny allergon particles millons that we cannot see.I know you're doctor says don,t get rid of the cat but when i did i noticed a huge difference. Not right away as it takes up to a year to get rid of cat fur even with a decent hoover and ditching carpets.I'm asthmatic and was chronic also when I had the cats, I know its hard but I think for the sake of you're health you have to be strong and let go.You've already proved you felt better out of the house ! Also my sons eczema disappeared after trying a natural cream made from herb and plant extracts which defied all the steroid creams any doctor prescribed.I think if all fails its worth trying alternative medicine it really does work for alot of people.Goodluck.

hello everyone,
Thank you all for your replies . You all have brought up some very great points and information. However I have some updates about whats been going on. It isnt just Asthma/Allergies anymore . I have been Oficially Diagnosed with COPD. This condition was brought up to me in the past as talk but I was the one who kinda brushed it off as I in no way smoked for 20 yrs , and also reading about COPD, I didnt have any Gradual incidents at all. Like breathing issues over time . When i started having issues BANG it was there full force. Anyhow I do have allergies and COPD . COPD also mimics asthma a great deal and infact it is known that most ppl are disgnosed with asthma first as its so close in symtom. I have been unresponsive to all treatments as I have mentioned above for teh asthma , The kicker was I was on Advair which is also used for COPD before i was even diagnosed with it and still was unresponsive. Right now as I stand .. I am still unresponsive to COPD . The only reason I can even walk around even a little bit is I was placed back on Prednisone .. AGAIN for the 8th time over the corse of 12 months . (which isnt good long term use). Being out of my house the few times I mentioned where i felt better , Dont happen as often anymore . The fresh air does make me feel better to an extent, (small) but im still very wheezy etc. If Im off the prednisone all Heck breaks lose in my lungs . I have only one option left to me as far as pharmacuticals. .. Xolair. And I was one who happen to come across that , looking up COPD (unresponsive) on the internet. The Dr was impressed though that I come armed with that info and feels I could make a fantastic Candidate. I am scared though. The side effects could be bad .. its an injectible med i would get in the office , but the effects could come on hours later and being aware alot of emds have side effects what concerns me the most is I spend a lot of time home alone . I have mentioned this to the Dr and he said , they will give me something that should I experience any negetive effects I can inject myself with the meds they will give me to counteract it. WEll what if Im sleeping?? ya know. I dont know this has just all turned to a bad nightmare. Someone mentioned the Cats above .. At the time The dr said i didnt have to rid of them as we were in middle of preparing shots for me to take . I still have the cats .. I just cant rid of them, i love them too much and they love me . they are my companions.. where I would otherwise be in an empty home most of the time . I AM married ... my husband works so much to keep roof over our head .. he works from 2am til 6.am then again from 8.15am til 6.30pm . I was left disabled from failed back surgery in 2003 so he had to pick up the lost income somehwere .. especially since io made double the income he made. Although i have social security , its only a Fraction of what i got before and the STATE insurance I have dont cover all my medical needs by far. When u retire ( so to speak) 32 years early it sure makes an impact on your social security check as im missing all them years working putting into it . The Xolair medicine Im trying to be placed on isnt easy either .. I have to be placed thru a series of blood work to be sure im even a candidate then My Dr has to apply thru the insurance company for a pre-approval , as this medication is VERY expensive. SO botttom line .. I know why im not getting better .. COPD thast remained untreated (so to speak) by my not Responsive to any medications at this time . The allergies are just my EXTRA benefit on top the COPD. AS people above have mentioned.. Pain med can cause resp distress... I dont doubt that but i do feel thats NOT the culprit here , However some of the advise you guys gave was fantastic. If I could find a way to live WITHOUT pain pills I would in New York Minute! The long term effects of pain pills do harm us in the long run which i am well aware. Addiction alone is a demon I wish I didnt carry but I do. Although my frame of mind is different from that seeking the pills and needing them to carry my adiction , the effects on the body remain the same . But again as mentioned in a previous post.. these pills help me walk and lead a better life .. Pain wise for me . Before when I was on Oxycontin and all that other stuff , i remained in bed a lot from pain. Making the change to methadone , i started exercising far more , walking , even went swimming and my life improved greatly . I still suffered pain dont get me wrong .. but it improved it enough that I could do these things to keep my body more healthy and active ..... Whats EFT? I have no idea whats most of the abbreviations use on .. what they mean. I am interested in getting an air purifier. I was told not to get a cheap one as they remain ineffected. However I cannot by no means afford a high priced one . I will looka round and perhaps come back and tell you guys what I have found and maybe you will know of its qualities. I aplogize for not coming back sooner .. just haven't been feeling well enough to come around . I thank you all for posting to my question. I am very thankful theres a wonderful site like that and great people who care enough to take the time to help others. Thank-you everyone!! Take care and godbless..
PS. any natural Vitamins etc, I can use for copd treatment.
Bromelain.. A pineapple extract as mentioned by CAROLINEN... is a property of pineapples that reduces pain.. What about eating pineapples itself? I mentione this as the Drug Methadone i use for pain.. causes the Need for high sugar intake , so i been trying to cut down on sugary items and instead have been eating Fresh Pineapples( and I dont mean just a few slices) I can eat a whole pineapple in one sitting .. so fair to say i eat 3-4 pineapples a week. LOL YUMMY!!!

Good to hear from you again Snakelady, 🙂 I was wondering how you were doing. Sorry to hear about the COPD, but at least it's a diagnosis and they can do things to help.

You ask what is EFT - look up www.emofree.com where Gary Craig and others explains what it is and what it does. Well worth a try and it needed't cost you anything - you can download the instructions for free. Some of the results are astounding, but don't expect that yourself - you will need to be persistent, working on each issue until the levels are down to a level of 1-2 out of 10 of being a problem.

As far as bromelain is concerned, I'm not sure how much pineapple one needs to consume to get the same amount from the fresh fruit. I have just looked it up and bromelain is in fact extracted from the stems of the pineapple. The amount in the fruit will probably be much lower. So continue to enjoy the fruit but then if you want to try the bromelain tablets then by all means do so.

I would also suggest taking a high quality fish oil and either starflower (borage) oil or evening primrose oil. These supply essential oils that are needed for every cell in the body and to produce hormone-like substances called prostaglandins -1 and -3, both of which are anti-inflammatory. Prostaglandin-2 is pro-inflammatory and is made from animal fats and margarine, so is it best to avoid them.

Eating a wholefood diet with lots of fruit and vegetables should also be helpful, oily fish 2-3 times a week (wild salmon, sardines, mackerel, herring), and no white sugar, bread, buns, pasta or rice - that includes bought cakes and biscuits - the goodness has been stripped out of them for the benefit of longer shelf-life. You need the nutrients from the whole food.

Wishing you well.

Caroline
