RE: Dust mite allergy
Hi Croydon,
When washing bedding, I have previously been advised by a pharmacist to use a special liquid in the last rinse, whichkills the dust mites and their eggs. This was a long time ago and I haven't used it for years, so I can't remember the exact name of the stuff, but I think it was called Roccal or Rockal, or something like that - you used to be able to buy it from a chemist.
Washing your bedding at 60 degrees also does something similar, so does drying the bedding outside on the line in bright sunlight (so I was told).
Trouble is, with a lot of today's sheets, duvets etc, it isrecommend to wash at 40 degrees. I found that Ikea duvets, pillows, mattress protectorsetc can be washed at 60 degrees and have swapped over to using their products. I have found that washing these bulky items regularly in a hot wash, as well as the weekly sheets, definitely helps.
Also, I keep my bedroom cool and well ventilated. This makes a huge difference as it keeps the dust mite population down, as well as aiding a better night's sleep. First thing in the morning, pull the duvet/sheets right back and give the bed time to air before making it, this helps too.
One last thing, my Dyson vaccum also made a big difference - even just the basic model helped - but I went on to buy the one with the hepa filter etc (animal) and that has just been brilliant.
Hope this helps.

We cant combat dust mite away but we can avoid them by doing such simple but effective ways:
1.Always keep our house clean, cover mattress, pillows and quilt with dust mite resistant covers
2. Wash sheets and pillowcases weekly in water hotter than 55 degrees Celsius.
3. Remove all soft toys from the bedroom.
4. Reduce humidity, use synthetic rather than feather pillows and doonas.
5. Remove carpets, rugs and mats, vacuum weekly.
And for allergy medications, your doctor may tell you to take one of the following medications to improve nasal allergy symptoms:
_Antihistamines
_corticosteroids
_decongestants
_cromolyn sodium
_leukotriene modifiers
Other therapies are:
_immunotherapy
_nasal lavage
Hope it will help you.
