Hi all,
just wondering what your thoughts are on massage and addictions!! my sister is in rehab for an addiction (nurofen plus) and i was thinking about maybe offering my services free of course to them whilst she is there. This place helps alcoholics as well. And you never know it may be a regular occurence for me even after that. I am a holistic therapist only since last year tho!!!! would love to hear your thoughts on it. :038:

I am a massage therapist and I think massage could be great: at the very least it's a nice experience for people, a relaxing one, as overcoming addiction is stressful.

On a deeper level, I think it can help too: the client gets in touch more with their own body, might become more accepting of their bodies and who they are (I can imagine many of them hate themselves for being addicted, and for other reasons that may have contributed to the addiction), and might want to start taking better care of themselves after experiencing nurturing touch from the therapist.

The human touch can maybe fill in some of the emptyness they were trying to fill with whatever they were addicted to?

You might want to post this in the massage section (too) to get the opinion of other massage therapists.

Good luck!

Benefits of massage

Hi Ashers27,

Yes ..sounds like a great idea..you never know this may actually generate some paying clients for you at the end of some regular trust building exercise for you!

Massage is both psychologically and emotionally healing for addicts ..as it's all about that human reassurance that comes via this art of healing touches.
Also physiologically you are also helping to push out the toxins of chemicals or alcohol they were once addicted to, too! So it has even more practical use in my opinion.

Word of causion tho, when people are still going through the re-adjustment from detox, or going cold turkey treatment options..their moods can be irratic and at times this can provoke alot of emotional outbursts...so be ready and receptive to this if you should cross this bridge and always know who else from their staff team would be able to help you if this should happen..

Otherwise Good luck!

with warm wishes

Vathani

I think it is a brilliant idea... I am sure the clinic will be very careful with who you would be able to treat.

Thank you all for your wonderful words. they actually made me want to do it more. I will hopefully be going down there soon altho sundays are the only days for visiting i will suss them out to see what they think. I'm sure they would be very cautious as to who they would take on as well. So thank you very much for responding. It would be a great experience.:) xxx

Excellent idea to offer massage to people suffering with addictions.

In my experience of working with drug users in a prison, for so many of them physical touch has been synonymous with violence, abuse, intrusion into personal space, lack of boundaries.
Therapist's touch can help not only to induce relaxation and release emotions that had been locked in the body, but will also offer a model of touch that is healing, soothing, safe and appropriate.

Good luck!

Hi Ashers,

I think there are some EFTers in Ireland, but not as many as in the UK. If you are specifically intersted in its applications for addictions, I believe there are only a few people who have significant experience in both. If you have any questions, feel free to get in touch!
