Hi there,
Is anybody working within the addictions field, if so how did you get started, what do other members think is a good way to approach a clinic on a voluntary basis?

Kindest regards
Karin

Hi

This is something I am interested in as my background involves working with offenders with addictions. I contacted a range of charities in my local area and asked if I could do therapies, but it appears its not as simple as that!

Some charities actually advertise for therapists when they have sources of funding, so I guess the best thing is to look around your area and contact any organisations that provide support for clients with addiction problems.

Don't know where you are based but

Multiple Choice are one of these organisations

Also does your central Police station have a DTTO/DISC agency they support drug users. Also local Community services.

Hi Karin,

I am a substance misuse counsellor, I have a diploma in counselling but that is definatly not neccesssary, voluntary work is a good way in, I did it for a while on a needle exhange project, also there is a company here in Manchester called People in Vision they do DANOS Aset level 2 & 3 courses in substance misuse by correspondence I did both my levels with them, they are easy and interesting courses and not at all expensive if you are interested, let me know and I will dig the phone number out for you.
Also the levels 2 & 3 in health and social care cover substance misuse.

Love

You don't say what your field is. If your thinking of GP clinics I wouldn't hold your breathe as the medical fraternity generally don't look on the alternative 'arts' favourably.
Why not set up your own clinic and advertise as such if you want to do it free then you may get some interest.
