Think it would be fab to have a forum topic for anyone who is newly disabled to offer support and advice to each other. I feel there isn't a forum which covers this at the moment and becoming disabled for whatever reason is hard to deal with and to have other people to talk to would be a great relief for me and others I believe.

Here's hoping,

Wend x

So much depends on the attitude you choose to embrace. Is it one where you feel sorry for yourself? Or is it a case of saying screw this i am not gonna let this disability beat me!
Attitude is everything!!!

Yeah i agree a forum might well be a good avenue to explore as long as people look to the positives rather than dwell on what was before.

Lets not pretend tho that an individual who is newly disabled has an easy adjustment to make; their world has been turned upside down.

Doctors can only doo so much the rest is up to you:)

As a newly disabled person I agree that people can't live looking backwards but sometimes to have an ear to moan to about what you have lost is helpful. No one can be positive all the time, especially when just told you won't recover and I am guilty of having bad days where all I do is feel sorry for myself. To find yourself mostly bed bound at 43 is hard to deal with.

My idea was that if there was a dedicated page we could help each other with coping mechanisms, moan to each other and help each other laugh too. Possibly this is not the right place for this but just wanted to see if there was any call for it. Here's hoping x

Not just the individual and doctors - what about government (at national and local level)?

Governments generally suck when it comes to the disabled. It really is the individual that will make the greatest difference:)

Our government, at the moment, is actively encouraging discrimination against people with disabilities. Have you read things in the press recently about the problems of moving around London? (Try here.)
Yes, I agree that action by individuals adds up to something that governments might take notice of, but individuals need to know about something before action is possible. A forum might be a venue to find out.

Encouraging is one thing, dealing with a disability and the attitudes of people in everyday life is a different ballgame. The best chance for an individual who is disabled is to accept the disability, refuse to let it beat them and do their best to get on with life.
What makes the difference is accepting that a disability is a part of your life, then it ceases to matter. Then you can move on and in turn grow.
Yeah a forum is a good idea for encouragement and resources etc so maybe it will happen

I can't see anything in what I wrote that suggests that someone should either not accept their disability or should 'let it beat them'. There are many people with disbilities, many disabilities and many ways of dealing.
Did you disagree with what I wrote previously? If so, what are your disagreements?

Hi Wend and Everyone,

I think it is a great idea. My other half is physically disabled, and we live in hope that one day, there will be an operation possible, and despite many disability challenges, we are at the last leg of paying off debts (incurred because of our physical challenges), the next stage being saving up for the day when it may be possible to have an operation to help.

Other disabilities can be more challenging, and the person may get progressively worse. However, since this is my own area of interest, I can vouch for knowing many people who have found better ways of:

  • Coping with their disability
  • Slowing down progress of disease

Personally, I highly recommend EFT and have set up a blog from one of my worst points till now. My story is one that turned into a happy one, but even if others´ does not involve the same level of recovery, I just want to say that you will be surprised how much you can achieve. It is very, very hard, and budget is always an issue, as being disabled, it is not easy and sometimes impossible to earn money. But you can find many ways to live better.

I hope this helps.
