I thought I would start a discussion about whether or not you rinse after you have washed your dishes in the soapy suds..

Now personally, I do rinse... but what about you? I do have an opinion on this - hence rinsing and posting! - but thought I would see if there were any other people out there who feel as I do.. (admittedly not the most important discussion of the day... hey ho :p)...

This is a great little thread. 🙂

There are several ways it could go.....

- Which is greener, washing up, or dish washer?
- Does the ingestion of detergent do us any harm?

I think deterents in general have become more complex in the last 20 years and may have a contributory effect on the rise of allergies.

Personally I use a class A dishwasher that uses less energy than washing up and it does a full rinse. It goes on in the early hours of the morning and uses the lower rate electricity.

I don't have the room in my tiny kitchen for the luxury that is a "dishwasher" therefore I rinse 🙂

As far as avoiding the overall chemical load on the body I believe it is eminently better to rinse.

With some 50,000 new chemicals used in the last 100 years which our bodies have to cope with, (many of them food additives ) the more we can avoid the better! Ditto I use as little cleaning product in the house as possible, avoiding sprays which vapourise the chemicals to make them more easily breathed in! Eating organic is also a good way to avoid chemicals - see Myarka's many posts on the subject!

So far we here haven't died from lack of chemical :033: :D.

Unfortunately I don't have a dishwasher so I wash by hand but always rinse thoroughly afterwards. OH is always very particular at making sure any last vestiges of suds have gone.:D Also we leave things to dry naturally as we believe tea-towels are just germ-hoarders. Lol.

No dishwasher (well unless you count hubby!) but we always rinse before & after washing dishes and cutlery etc. Also, as part of the washing-up routine, wipe down all surfaces & clean sink.

In the same vein, for those who 'hand-wash' dishes - dry dishes with teatowel or leave to drain and dry?

I rinse and get annoyed when someone dries up the washing by hand after they wash them and not rinsing! it take longer but worth it! I feel I could taste the washing up liquid on plates cereal bowls etc!

I use surcare washing up liquid and I rinse the cutlery plates etc under hot tap or fill up bowl with clean hot water after washing them and I feel it is more hygenic that way!

if I am hand washing, wash them under running water and cleaner on a brush then stack on drainer and rinse with boiling water poured over them. most of the time they are dry in a couple of mins I only use the dishwasher if I am doing a full load.

Aha excellent, lots of replies!! Rightyo.. my stance is this.. ahem.. there are a couple of people I work with and the insist on washing up all the cups in the sink and then placing them straight away, suds n'all, on the side without rinsing.

I would like to point out that one of them insists on having a shower after bathing because she thinks the idea of lying in your own dirty water and not rinsing is disgusting.. yet she will drink from a cup that has been washed in its own dirty water and not rinsed...

The idea of not rinsing off chemicals astounds me. Do you think perhaps it's just that people prefer not to think about these sorts of issues? I was hoping a 'non-rinser' would surface and tell me why they do what they do.. (I will have to ask my colleagues when next in..I just don't want to sound like an a*se and then ostracised as the 'Rinser'!)..
