Hi All,

Someone I knew, I'd vaguely remembered, had something like this happen to them 2-3 months ago. So I was alert, but hope I wouldn't have fallen for it anyway.

I got a phone call from an Asian voice (sounded like a call centre with others there), saying it was Microsoft, and they'd been getting error messages that there was a trojan or something slowing my computer. Had I noticed anything like this, slowness or problems? (Well of course we often all have.) I let her speak her schpiel. She wanted me to "run" something and rather than type it in (!!!) I just wrote it down: "prefetch". So the thing was for me to run that.

When I told her I had no way of knowing she was from Microsoft and reckoned it was a scam, the phone went dead. No return number of course.

I don't know what scam they were trying on me, but the other person found their computer then wouldn't really work unless they bought something to "repair" it.

Yeah, I still occasionally get them. They use microsoft and it works for a while...I soon got wise to that.
Odd, why they waste time calling people. They don't get anything out of you if you don't buy anything of them? Not very logical. I think they are bored bunch of people looking for excuse to yap away...Thats the best explanation I can come up with anyway Lol!

I had one the other day. Martin answered it for me and said just hold on a minute. Needless to say we just left him hanging on for some time before he got the hint and hung up! 🙂

You're kidding. Bored people? Oh, no, no, this is an organised network. A certain number of hits (foolish people) and each one is money in the bank. Let's guess 10-20 are at it at once somewhere... that's serious fraud.

We had a call last week. Asian guy, asking if the computer was switched on and advising us that we had serious security problems and why not log on and give him remote control so that he could fix it for us................Yeah right!!

We sent him off with a flea in his ear 😀

I confess to having a bit of fun with the one who called me - I first told him I didn't have a computer and he called me a liar! So I then said that we all had computer degrees in our house (not far from the truth 3/5 of us have!) and I have over 30 years experience in the computer industry and he called me a liar again. Eventually he hung up on me!

Yes i have had one of these phone calls too, and it was an asian voice, he said he was from Microsoft and i had a security breach on my computer. I said well that does not affect me then, because we all use Macs in our house, and he hung up.
