Wasn't sure whether to put this in General Therapies or General Discussion so opted for the latter. (I didn't want it getting lost in all the non-CAM discussions in the Books,TV and Films Reviews forum ;))

Whilst in my doctors pharmacy today I noticed that they have a range of books (Family Doctor Series) for sale about a variety of things e.g. dealing with cancer, dealing with epilepsy etc. but the one that really caught my eye was one called "Understanding Complementary Medicine". (Here's the details on Amazon)

Now, many skeptics would poo-poo this as "just another book by the woo's" but in fact it's published in association with the British Medical Assocation and is written by Dr Lewith of Southampton General Hospital who is leading a research group that investigates complementary therapies.

The book covers all sorts of CAMS including Accupuncture, Reiki style healing, Meditation and Mind Therapies, Aromatherapy, Reflexology, Herbalism, Homeopathy etc. and gives an honest and open viewpoint on them all and how they can be beneficial as well as known side effects/issues i.e. especially with herbalism and the counter effects some may have on conventional medications.

I decided to pick myself up a copy, as it's a good little reference (only about 100 pages long) and may help with those occasional clients who are a bit unsure about the treatments that are on offer and how safe or effective they can be. I think if you can show those sorts of clients something that says "look the BMA are working with therapists such as myself as they recognise the effectiveness and importance of what we do" then that can only be a good thing.

Has anyone else come across the little gem?

Hi Giles

Looks like an interesting wee book...have just bought a copy from Amazon for a penny (what a bargain)!!!

I think your right.

Received my book today, was surprised at how informative it is about the various therapies it covers.

Thank you for letting me know about it.

My pleasure.
It is surprising how much is covered in so few pages and that's what made me get a copy. If I'd only seen it on Amazon I'd have probably ignored it, but actually seeing it before I bought it made me think it was a worthwhile £3.50
