How would life be without power if this happened?

UPDATE: A near M-Class flare measuring C9.5 took place off the western limb at 05:13 UTC Tuesday morning.
Could someone let me know what is the significance of this? I've looked at the web site which is full of data, but doesn't seem, as far as I can see, to offer any comment.
Hope I'm not the only one on here in the dark when it comes to all this excitement about solar activity!
Hi Derek,
The sun goes through fairly regular cycles of activity, and is due a peak next year when I think it will have a switch of its poles. For the last year or so it has been very quiet and some thought it was about to go into a possible 70 year quiet period, the last time this happened one could drive a coach and horses across the Thames and it was called a mini-ice age. So it is nice to see it waking up and 'behaving more normally'. Of course as it does gain in activity it might produce flares that hit the earth and these may disrupt communications, but most flares head off in the wrong direction.

Thank you, Chris! I am illuminated!
big storm - maybe will affect GPS

Ah lovely sunshine, bliss...:nature-smiley-008:
yes - very warming...

The last big solar storm was back in 1859, it destroyed telegraph wires and was the largest geomagnetic storm in recorded history. Back then we only had telegraph, and our telegraph wires were quite sturdy. From the damage done we can calculate how massive the solar storm was, and it was huge! In fact, if that solar storm of 1859 were to hit us today it could cause trillions of pounds in property damage and hundreds of billions of pounds in damage for each of the countries that were affected. Food riots would break out, governments could collapse...and there would be no emergency coming to the rescue because they would also lose there power and ability to communicate. Transformers could get wiped out, meaning that whole continents would not have electrical power. Sophisticated electronics on modern cars could be destroyed, Wed essentially be back to the way we were in 1859. Gone too would be the satellites controlling most of our luxuries today, including communication, television, radio, and the Internet where you are reading this very post.
Makes you think!

Oh dear oh dear oh dear - what a cheerful, optimistic post!! :016:
I remember all the hype about the Millennium - lifts were going to stop, computers were going to crash, communications would be down, planes were going to fall out of the sky. What happened? Nothing.
Even if all the catastrophes did happen - and don't forget that people in countries hit by hurricanes, floods and earthquakes are in a similar situation, I'm sure that people would find their real community spirit and start helping each other.
