I know the media has a job to do but I am fed up with the over the top way that many things are reported. When a major even happens most newspapers can fill more than half of thier edition with nothing else but that story.
I want facts not speculation or hype, why do the media feel they have to embellish stories with if and maybe?
For example last sunday morning the BBC News ran a story the opening sentance was... It has emerged that David Beckham may have been invited to the Royal Wedding!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry but it is neither a fact OR news so why waste valuable news time (that we all pay for through the licence fee) with tripe like this.
Its not just the BBC they all do it, I dont buy newspapers anymore used to read the Daily Mail but their sense of moral outrage over stories written in a way to make them seen much worse than they actually are became very tedious. Every thing has been dumbed down for mass appeal but who decided the masses were dumb?
There are so many worthy news stories going on in the world does everything need to be dumbed down to this extent.
Apologies for the rant !:)
Exactly!!!!!!! x
No need to apologise! It is extremely irritating and as you say, who decided the masses were dumb? Gadaffi tried to keep his masses dumb 😡

FYI, Libya's literacy rate is around 82.6%, which is the highest of all North African countries (for comparison, Egypt's is around 71.4%). Of course, literacy rate doesn't necessarily speak to the quality of education (the UK and U.S. enjoy a 99% literacy rate...).

I am sure there are many people who agree with your post trinabeanbag, and so right you are, it is very frustrating, newspapers etc., must think we are all numbskulls. My son was on the 'peaceful' cuts demonstration in London last weekend but my goodness everytime we switched the t.v. on or then read about it, all they could do was portray the separate lot of vandals smashing the place up, showing police with paint all over them or such like - there was hardly any coverage are talking to any of the legitimate crowd so we could see what it was really all about.
I do agree that many newspapers overhype news stories and manipulate their readership but would suggest that the tabloids are worse than the 'serious' papers in this respect. If you read the Daily Mail then what do you expect? What upsets me is that a few days after a major news story breaks and is given blanket coverage by the media it then drops off the board. For example, where are the updates on the Japanese nuclear crisis or even the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami? Where is the news of what's happening now in Egypt? (Replaced by Libya.) You really have to search to find the follow ups but for the people who are living there it's all still going on for them.
If it weren't for the Daily Mail (there are free copies available at the gym where I have my room, which I might browse whilst waiting for my next client) just this week, I would not know that some female celebrity's (can't remember her name) bottom is bigger now than it was a few years ago (full page-size pictures proved this); some celebrity chef (I think) was seen kissing a woman not his wife (more pictures); Janet Street Porter does not like Twitter (a whole page taken to explain why); all sorts of interesting trivia about the forth-coming royal wedding (none of which I can now recall); and so much more that just now escapes me. I can see why people buy it!

Try http://www.csmonitor.com/World - there's a good April Fool bit too! 😉 Having just returned from Egypt, it certianly is still happening over there. They are deeply troubled about the future. One thing I've learnt since my return was that while the women were welcomed during the protests, once Mubarak had gone, they were told they were not wanted. hmmm
Derek, yes, it would be dreadful if you missed out on such important news, wouldn't it? I (this is absolutely true) turned down the opportunity to work on Concorde because I am not an avid (or even on occasional) reader of Hello and OK magazines and I wouldn't have known who the passengers were! I also wouldn't have had anything in common with most of the crew. 😮

As I stated in my first post i no longer read the mail. In fact I do not buy newspapers any longer for this reason but i scour different sources for my news and completely agree that important events drop off the radar very quickly. Japan of course is still very releveant and I want to know what is happening there still, but some days dosent even warrant a mention but the fact Cherl Cole has put on a bit of weight gets almost a whole page. Im sorry but the size of C. Coles a*se is NOT news (dont even know what she is famous for)!!!!!!!!! I do use the internet to find my news as the TV channels are no better (again see my first post)
I dont watch soaps or reality TV or read these "Celeb" mags that are so prevelant but I do want to know and I care what is happening out there in our big wide world. Even the broad sheets seem to report with a certain slant for instance Guardian is a real left leaner- I just want facts is it possible to find anywhere that delivers news in this way. I want to read whats happening without prejudice is this possible???
