Gordon Brown said it at a Labour conference in 1999. He couldn't even say anything original!
:p:p:p

Sorry, Aspire, I was chuckling at the comment that Gordon Brown couldn't even come up with an original quote - and agreeing with you!

Unfortunately this is what Labour Governments do. Borrow up to the hilt and then leave the country in an appalling mess.
A double whammy really as the Conservertives then try to put everything right by leaving the rich to enjoy their riches and penalising the poor.

Please. Remember it's Conservatives AND Liberal Democrats.
Is That the same Lib Dems who pledged to abolish tuition fees????

Don't know? Didn't really pay much attention to what the Lib Dems had to say during the election.
YOU ARE KIDDING AREN'T YOU!!!!? She only left office 20 years ago!
Some people need to wake up!
Kidding? Not really, everything has a past, you can't make those kinds of change and not alter the direction of a nation for a very long time. We only just finished paying back our debt to the USA for the loans we received after world war 2. So 20 years is not such a long time.
In any case, what I mean is that the dismantling of our industrial base was down to Mrs T, that's going to make it harder to get back on track. She sold off many of our national assets, ie vehicles for state authority, and presided over massive changes in the City, the Press, the Unions etc etc.
And she dragged British politics so far to the right that all the parties had to follow to have a chance of election. The Labour party abandoned everything it stood for to get re-elected. This was the situation that made a s**t like Blair electable.
Do you remember the joke from 1997: 'Tony Blair MP' is an anagram of 'I'm Tory Plan b'?
But the most fundametal change in our national psyche was the devaluing of everything except money. This is the situation that is behind breakdown of law and order, the family and communities, the power of big business, and the unfettered recklessness of the banks.
We had a party with fireworks the night she left office.
Anyway, not in a very long time has there been so much politicisation of the nation, glad to find we're not all asleep.
???
You're right about that! Handy attribute for any despot.
Hitler brought us the Volkswagen, Thatcher gave us fluffy ice-cream!

Er, no - the VW is a far greater contribution than fluffy ice-cream.
I did put in an extensive reply to you post, however I'm not allowed to post some of it,so won't bother only to say that Margaret Thatcher had more B***'S than any Prime Minister since!:)

A very small portion of your original post was removed as it had clearly contravened forum guidelines regarding 'language'. However most of your post was left untouched, although I see you have since reworded that whole post.
Whilst the current affairs forum is generally lightly moderated, it is still necessary to adhere to the guidelines on language, and in particular to keep hostility out of postings.
This thread has now veered off-topic from the OP so would future posters please return to this from now on.
Thanks
