Many people feel very sad at the news of the passing of this unique and talented individual, who touched so many at different levels. David Bowie was a one-off and he inspired so many people to break free from the constraints of "normal"!
A friend just posted this blog, which I love and wanted to share:

'End of an era' is such a cliché, but it seems very strange that someone who's music has been with me from Space Oddity to Blackstar (I even liked Tin Machine) is no longer here. He'll be missed.
I remember him (like so many I feel) mostly for the Ziggy Stardust era - some good songs! He was instrumental in the glamrock era and allowed so many to become more flamboyant. Ironically he has said that he never wanted to be a rock star....not done too badly then!
He was a man of many, many talents, including acting. In Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence,he played a soldier brilliantly. I can't remember much about the film (hope they show it again soon) but do remember that despite the brutality, there was a surprising amount of humanity and humour and the famous ending, with "Mewy Cwismas, Mr Lollance"
And another bit of brilliant acting! I didn't even know he'd appeared on Broadway as the Elephant Man, with no make-up, so he had to get the effect of deformity through his body.

Yes I didn't know about this until this evening via an unscheduled programme on BBC2 "Five Years" (90 mins) where the director explains what he saw in Bowie for the role and talks about the voice he acquired. The programme is mostly about his music though over the 70s and into the 80s. (It will be on the bbc iplayer for those wanting to watch it i.e. by tomorrow). Fascinating, inventive man.
