Hello, I read the messages on here today re Swine Flu and the way it is going, and yes it can be a big worry, but as an Emergency Planner for over 28 years now I can tell you a bit about whats going on.
In the 28 years I have served I have found over the last 10 years that Emergency Planning has now turned into a multi million pound business for some.
The Terrorist attacks made it easy for new firms just established to sell security products to councils and get rich by being very good marketers, the same happened with Bird Flu 1000s got rich from it, but it was never ever going to hurt the public.
Now we have swine Flu, the effects of it I am told are very mild, in some cases less than a normal winter flu illness mostly.
As an emergency planner I feel we would have all been informed of dangers by now if things were to get bad, as it is it is yet another firm getting rich in printing this Flu booklet, that could spread the virus to every home if anyone working on it had got it, had it, getting over it, thats crazy to me doing it this way.
If people in high places felt the public needed protection they would have let us Planners know by now, as it is we just see more people getting rich out of panic to the public.
Remember the egg thing? did that kill you? what about the BSE thing? it is in certain companies interests to panic folk, money is hard to get these days, so just dream up a scare, and who knows you could soon get your million quid too.

This is really interesting - I thought as much. I surmised the deaths from 'this illness' were of those who were undernourished or immune-compromised. An immune-boosting wholefood diet is what we need!

As said before the booklet is to advise everyone, what to do, who to contact, etc, has everyone received a copy yet? Also a number of people dont listen to the news, radio, TV, etc, if there was a change in the current situation those people need to be informed as well as everyone else, unfortunately this is the only way.
Luckily the people who have had the flu so far has been mild, but who knows what will happen in a few weeks time, alternatively it could have gone the other way and today we would be in a very different situation, at least you would be informed as what to do for the best. We are all hoping if will fizzle out and that will be that, but we just dont know.
The people who are involved in planning these 'scenarios' have to weigh up a lot of factors before the decision to send out information to all homes, it is not a decision which is taken lightly.
As for Alertnative4u, I have no idea why you are not informed, but this is real and people are dealing with it, but thankfully not on a huge scale.
Alternatively, have the last few weeks have been a figment of my imagination ............?

I don't think you've properly understood Alternative's point, Fudge. He (she?) isn't saying he doesn't know about swine flu but that as a professional emergency planner he hasn't been brought into the act by the government. He's also saying that there is a whole lot of scaremongering that goes on in cases like this. Which is what a lot of people believe, including me. Just as it seems that Donald Rumsfeld may have some financial links to the company which manufactures Tamiflu, I am wondering who has gained by the printing of the leaflets delivered to every household in the country. Basically I think this was another total waste of our money.

There are various opinions on Swine Flu right now. TBH, as a non-expert, it's hard to know what to believe. Read the conflicting opinions here:

But what I do get from this BBC news link is that, while it's easy to dismiss the subject as 'conspiracy theory' and so forth ..... and I can't quite envision Kleenix being in league with the Illuminati! :p .... the jury is still out on whether this may be a major threat to many people. Let's not be too complacent?

we have been told today that the normal winter flu campaign will go ahead as normal
the swine flu vaccine will be ready sometime in august not december as we were previously told & we will be involved in doing this as well !!
we got some links to the hsj from unison - they are talking about redundancies, going back on the previously agreed 2.25% pay rise for next year & complaining about the cost of the nhs pension scheme 🙁
