I've only just seen this item of news:
http://news.independent.co.uk/world/middle_east/article3204058.ece
Apparently a 19 year old Saudi woman who was gang raped by 7 men has been sentenced to 200 lashes for adultery.
It's made me think: I am often highly critical of this country but it must be so much worse to live in a country where women are totally subjugated by men.
Yet Saudi Arabia is a big ally of both this country and the US, so presumably official protests will not amount to much.
xx
I've said this here before, but when do you think we can look forward to American and British forces invading Saudi Arabia to import democracy and human rights? Don't hold your breath...
(And for the avoidance of any doubt - as this comment has been misconstrued in the past - no, I don't seriously expect it. Hypocritical old world, isn't it?)
so let me get this right a girl has been gang raped and she is getting 200 lashs for it ,can i ask what the men are getting or are they to be congratulated for doing it does it show that they are manly or that the girl asked for it, but then again women in certain countries are classed as second or third class

If I remember rightly (though if you read the link it's all in there), some of the men have been sentenced to jail terms. Do please read the link, it's all there. She has been found guilty of adultery, as she is married. However, encouragingly her husband is standing by her. It's actually a bit messy as she was involved with flirting with some guy on the phone (would you believe he was raped by the rapists too!) And it's further complicated because she's Shia ie the minority in Saudi Arabia, while the courts are Sunni controlled.

The international community should be outraged over this. She is the victim and she's getting punished for it 😡
shock , outrages ,i can not belive what i am reading . this should not be happen in any part of the world .ever person in ever country should have the right to lead there own life and walk the streets safley .
we only get to read and find out what is going on . on very few of these cases ,
wordl leaders have got to start to bring pressuers on these countrys that treat women as 2 nd class citiens .
what must this family be going thou .
hope and pray that husband and wife coming thou it togeather and the sentenced is not carried out on this women .
My husband just told me (as the link isnt working for me) that the lady got the '40' lashes due to the fact that she got into the car (willingly) of a man who was not known by the family, thus getting the adultery sentence.
Actually, Jen, I don't think she has received any punishment yet. But the sentence was increased to 200 lashes:
Coverage of the case this month in the usually tightly censored Saudi media infuriated the authorities. They increased her sentence to 200 lashes and six months in prison. Her sentence still hangs over her.

I just stumbled across this article on it:
My harrowing story ...

Unbelievable.

That's basically the same as the link in the first post of this thread.

Ohhh ... oops! :dft001:
I didn't read the other link and thought this link was an interview with her of her personal account of what happened, whereas the other one simply reported the news. But ... I guess not! lol (that's teach me not to read each link, eh?) 😉
I read the DM article and barbaric is the word i would use to sum up the treatment of this woman, rape is a far, far worse crime than 'mingling' and its about time daft laws like these should be abolished.
Warmest wishes- calla lily x
have been thinkin about this poor lady and wonder if she will recover from the 200 lashes? hope she will not have them.Rape is rape however it comes about.7 men knew what they were doing is wrong and i wonder why did they also rape her companion and why did he open the door for?

Cultural differences are sometimes so hard to fathom. There's been countless cases like this, where a woman has been raped and then punished for it. I just can't get my head round it.

Oh dear Sunanda you sound as though you are trying to make excuses for this poor girl to be lashed. So she flirted, so what! She committed adultery, so what! Live and Let Live. Let he without sin cast the first stone eh!! Their actions are just backward. That's all there is to it.
