Monsanto wins World Food Prize! What do we all think?

Hi all,
I don't know about the rest of you, but I am gobsmacked that Monsanto has received the prestigous world food prize award. They seem to be the untouchable organisation who are dictating to the governments and in the meantime:

  • Monopolized our food and driven millions of farmers into poverty
  • Designed dangerous artificial growth hormones for dairycows
  • Created franken-seeds and prohibited investigation into their long-term effects
  • Tried to block the labelling of GMO foods
  • Patented food in a sickening attempt to own nature itself (Hey, Monsanto! I grow my own broccoli, what you gonna do about it?)
  • Enforcing these patents by suing and threatening smallholders and family farmers who violate Monsanto´s iron rule
  • Caused mass suicide among millions of farmers whose GM crops fail
  • Invented pesticides thatkill bees and endangered other wildlife
  • And later had the audacity to launch legal action against the European Union after it finally banned bee-killing pesticides in May this year.
  • And so on, to infinity and beyond. We could be here all day (soya, roundup, cotton, aspartame, take your pick of therest…)

What's everyone's thoughts on this? Is anyone else worried that our food system is being slowly made GM (like corn and soya already is), Anyone else got concerns?

Thanks for this info Maya that Monsanto have won the World Food Prize and well argued/explosed!

Re. the bee issue. Since Monsanto have been implemented in the decline of bees, what did they do? They bought up the leading bee research companies in US so now can cook the books/manipulate statistics. Very devious and sinister.

Unbelievable that Monsanto have been given this award! What a stitch-up job! Only goes to show how Monsanto are in cahoots with the powers that be. No surprise there.
Truly, deplorably awful.

Maya - you don't say which country you are in. I know that in US the public have less choice over being able to avoid GM food, e.g. corn and soy.

Here in UK there is more ability to choose, although the US export of GM foodstuffs (e.g. corn and soy) only has a voluntary requirement for segregation and labelling from non GM. God, don't get me started!!!

Here's some help though....look at the barcodes

Thanks Amy, glad to see someone else is as horrified as me about all this! I'm in the UK also, so thanks for the barcode link.. I shall take that knowledge to my next shop 🙂

Also, Monsanto are the creators of aspartame:eek: - don't even get me started on that one!

I hope with more awareness things can change.. as there is very little mainstream media covering this topic, I am still wondering what on earth is going on and why there isn't more discussion about this.

Anyway, rant over (for now) 🙂

I too, am horrified. Who sets the parameters for these awards????

The future of this planet is questionable when things like this are going on - all you say, Maya, about Monsanto's manipulation of our food is right. They are an UTTERLY DESPICABLE company. Those with dollar signs stuck in their eyes - ie those who run things - are completely blinded or hoodwinked.

I am very concerned for my children, let alone my grandchildren.

Good question, the same people who gives Barack Obomer the peace prize, the EU, and nominates the likes of Tony Blair 🙁

This is more to do with political posturing!!

Of course this is all about PR and political posturing....but the public can't be duped!

Monsanto's track record is so sinister and disastrous that more people are becoming
aware of just how awful they are. The public have the power to vote with what they buy.

World Food Prize? Ha, more like World Con Prize that has been blatantly exposed and has backfired! :p

Unfortunately, the evidence seems to be that most of them can be duped - that is, if they even care.

That's my point....when GM was new, we were somewhat duped. However, with better knowledge that situation has really turned around and people are significantly better informed and much more wary. Those that care about the quality of their food and/or the sinister ramifications of what this bio-tech company is having worldwide (e.g. environmentalists) do INDEED care about this issue.

I would be very interested to hear from some of the millions of people whose lives have been saved, or whose health greatly improved, solely because of Monsanto's research, technologies and food products 🙂

I am horrified too... it seems like these prizes lately have no real meaning anymore.
