I wondered what you thought of the following...
The case of the contaminated saline solution at Stepping Hill is news at the moment. The Police understandably are under pressure to move the investigation along. However, the press over the last couple of days have released the name, picture and details of a nurse who the police is questionning. I don't know whether Rebecca Leighton is innocent or not - but should the details be kept away from the press until she is actually charged?
This reminds me of the case of Jo Yeats in Bristol last Christmas, and all the details of her Landlord being released to the press, and then someone else was convicted a week later.
Hi Venessa,
I've moved this thread to the Current Affairs forum, as it's more relevant there (or here as it now is!)
I agree with you, the press has a lot to answer for (as with all the phone hacking scandle etc.) I firmly believe it's wrong to be naming and highlighting people currently undergoing legal/police investigations if those people haven't been shown to have been guilty. Whilst such investigations and criminal proceedings take place, those people should be anonymous and only named once found guilty (if they're found innocent they should be left alone to get on with their life).

Media is an ar**. Sensation sells. Utter lack of responsible reporting. Good one Vanessa.
I think that two things happened - the police do seem to have released her name before she was 'charged'. Note the names are usually released after someone is charged, it can take years before they are proven guilty or innocent.
But to compound this the press found out that someone was being questioned and found out who and released her nems - is this wrong if they say that she is being questioned, it certainly is if they say or imply she is guilty.

Thank you for moving it Giles.
Just wondering too... say Rebecca Leighton is released from questionning and not charged any further, how does she possibly go back to doing her job at the hospital?

We had a case of someone of impeccable character near here named in the paper for child porn with all the attendant press rushing around - it was awful. Eventually it was found his credit card had been cloned - but not for well over 2 years. He had his computers taken and searched for all that time. Eventually he has had to get a different job - but no thanks to his previous bossed or anyone else who knew him. What it has done to his family's life was just dreadful.
I thought I had misread the situation when Rebecca Leighton was sent to prison, so it is heartening to see that she has now been released. However, the role of the media is still shocking in these situations....
It seems to be happening more and more and must destroy lives. It could probably happen to anyone. I couldn't believe how Jo Yeats' landlord was treated in the press either. x
And now they are both rumoured to be suing the Police for compensation....can this be right either?
I don't think so... two wrongs don't make a right. x
