I watched this documentary on BBC4 earlier this evening and was appalled at the way these children were discarded. This should never be allowed to happen in this day and age!! If anyone is interested, this website has further details :

I found it more upsetting than the programme about China's Stolen Children.
Take care.

Bulgaria's Abandoned Children

Sunday 18 November
10:00pm - 11:30pm
BBC2
If you missed it on BBC4, here's another chance to see this angry, shattering documentary filmed in Bulgarian orphanage Mogilino, which houses 75 abandoned and disabled children. It's by the team that made The Dying Rooms, the 1995 film that revealed the horrific neglect of babies in China's state orphanages. Before we meet the children, there's footage of their blank faces. Many rock their wasted bodies silently - a response to lack of stimulation. Quickly we learn that the sanguine staff see these kids as animals, or at best doomed creatures who need only basic washing and feeding. Love, play and learning are not in the schedule. We're reminded that Romania was told to reform its care homes before it was approved for EU membership. For Bulgaria - also granted membership in January this year - there was no such stipulation. How did we let this slip past our radar?

I have visited Bulgaria a few times, and children as young as 5 are out on the streets begging/pick-pocketing.no doubt,to take any gains gotten back to their parents.
one day,i offered to buy a little boy an ice-cream,but he wanted money...and was quite nasty towards me,when i refused to give him any lev....(currency),i just felt so much for him,he was hot,and i thought it would be nice for him to have something for himself...but he was obviously sent out to get money and nothing else, and would be afraid if he took the ice-cream,not the money...maybe his parents were nearby keeping an eye on him
some of these children on the streets were out there begging almost 24 hours a day.
just a rant.Dee.x
