Hello masseurs 🙂

I will (hopefully) be qualifying in Holistic Massage (ITEC) in March.
As a student I have had membership with the CThA, but am considering switching to the Federation of Holistic Therapists, as their insurance is slightly different.

What PAs are you a member of, and do any have massive advantages over the others? Do you all end up joining a specialist association once you've done Aromatherapy or Reflexology, rather than a multidisciplinary one? My tutor certainly has.
Any advice gratefully received.

Hi,

Like you I joined the CThA when I was a student and stayed with them since qualifying. I use their insurance because it's a good price, but it may not be flexible enough as my business expands.

I'm now also a member of the CNHC.

Myarka.

i,m a member of UKOMpp which is specific to my trade, also CTHa as it is recognised throughout the therapy trades.
i would suggest CNHC as they seem to be leading the way in conjunction with the gov and DOH.

Things are changing alot in the massage world and CNHC should be a good bet.

CNHC is actually not a Professional Association, it's one of the regulators for complementary therapy. (There are three actually at mo. CNHC, GRCCT and BCTC).
Choosing a PA is really not so much about the insurance - you can have insurance from any of those companies without belonging to the attached PA - depending on where you find best value. Just ring them up and ask and there are loads more companies offering insurance.
A PA is more to do with the kind of information and support you get from them. The reason why so many people end up joining specialist associations is that they are kept more up to date with what is relevant to them. Having been a member of a multi-disciplinary PA, I can't say that I got much that was relevant to me from them. If in Essex and London you need to join somewhere that is recognised by local authority.

The CNHC is the only regulator recognised by the Government and the members of PAs who sit at the GCMT are eligible to join CNHC, I recommend you look towards
GCMT for advice. I know personally both the leaders of FHT and CThA and both would provide you with the relevant information you need in this industry, The FHT have a quarterly member magazine which I find high quality and informative

Thanks everyone!

I am in London/Kent, so I'd better check which ones the Local Authority approve, although FHT are so well known I bet there won't be a problem.
Good to know you rate the FHT, Biggaz - I asked them about their insurance separately from enquiring about the PA, and I got an email saying I would need to be a member to use their insurance. Must admit I do not like the idea of checking out loads of insurance companies! I've managed to avoid having to do it this far in my life, I don't fancy starting now :p

My only problem with the CThA and their insurance is that they will not allow me to use anything that has essential oils in it because my ITEC course has a blanket no e.o.s policy - including those lovely reflexology levender foot wipes, Tui balms etc, and I'm already sick of Boots Disinfectant wipes! I have no desire to pretend to be an Aromatherapist without the relevant qualifications.

I also genuinely wondered if there were any specific advantages, like the directories you get to join. Thanks for the info. Anyone else got any thoughts?

In view of the content of this recent revelation I would be very careful about 'advice' from any of these associations.

Dear Colleague,

I have been sent a copy of an email which I feel it is my duty as a practitioner of orthodox medicine, a practitioner of complementary medicine and a tax payer, to share with you. The message is from John French CEO of the Federation of Holistic Therapists and begins with a reference to acting on the advice of the CNHC Registrar Maggie Dunn on a plan to take control of the professions council for Reflexology. www.Reflexologyforum.org

The email sent to Kush Kumar, CEO of the Complementary Therapists Association and copied to Jennifer Wayte, President of the Federation of Holistic Therapists, goes on to describe how other professional associations are to be tricked into supporting the motion to change the Forum’s constitution without knowing that in conjunction with CNHC these two organisations, having removed voting rights from the other organisations, intend to establish a multi-discipline Professions Council and funnel unsuspecting therapists into CNHC.

It should be noted that these two organisations are charging £15 a time to ‘validate’ individuals for admission to the CNHC.

Essentially the focus is to remove the entire executive, remove voting rights from member organisations and change the objective of the Forum from supporting Reflexology to supporting CNHC. I have a full draft of the motion referred to in the email and am happy to share.

Increasingly over the past twelve months there have been rumours about various actions of CNHC and therapists themselves have made their own judgement by not registering with the body. This is obvious by only approximately 1600 choosing to be listed as CNHC registrants.

A Registrar colluding with the heads of two associations (one of which is a charity) and sharing an objective of subverting the democratic process which forms the very core of voluntary self-regulation is quite frankly disgusting.

I don’t know if these actions are criminal. I believe there are some laws about operating cartels or ‘fixing’ bids for government grants and CNHC has received substantial government funding. What I am certain of is that this type of behaviour does not come within the job specification of a Registrar, the CEO of a charity, the President of a charity or even the Chair of a professional association.

I shall be writing to my MP, to the GMC, to the Secretary of State for Health and to the Charities Commission. I am not a member of either organisation but you who are may wish to convey your views to those who are acting in your name.

James

Subject: Motion to amend the Refelxology Forum constitution

Kush,

As discussed, following Friday’s advice by Maggie Dunn to propose a motion to the RF regarding changes required to its constitution, please find attached the motion and the original constitution to which it relates.

If you can second this motion I will send to the RF executive, copying in all members, asking for an EGM to be scheduled to approve/disapprove this motion. I will also be informing them that the FHT will not be paying its 2010 fees until the EGM is held.

This will drive 3 possible outcomes;

 • The RF ignore this motion enabling both the FHT and Ctha to withdraw with CNHC support to forum an alternative professional forum or multi-disciplined one.
 • The RF follow correct protocol and hold an EGM. If the motion is rejected then (1) above applies.
 • The RF follow correct protocol and hold an EGM. If the motion is accepted then we can work with the members (no executive) towards a multi-disciplined forum.

As agreed, I will contact Nicola Hall (BRA) and Tracey Smith (AOR) to gain support for the motion (no mention of multi-disciplined option at this stage).

You will contact Helen Neal (APNT).

If you can get back to me asap to confirm the seconding of this motion by the Ctha I will move quickly on this matter.

Regards
John

Hi
The following associations are all members of GCMT: (lead body): AAPA, AHBMT, APNT, CThA, FHT, ICNM, ISRM, LCSP, MTI, NAMMT, SMTO, STO. Your local authority will have a list of accepted organisations and you can choose from these. See what value you get from each! Sure google will come up with their websites. ICNM is very well recognised in London area. Good luck.

Thanks BGFL. I'll go and look it up.

I thought that as you knowing them personally you could vouch for their personal integrity. It is so difficult to know who to trust these days. I just wanted to confirm that the people that you were talking about are the same ones that are acknowledged as running these two organisations.

It was just a little unclear with the Federation of Holistic Therapists being a charity who is actually responsible. Is it the CEO John French or the President Jennifer Wayte that would carry the can in event of a compaint to the Charities Commission?

Neither of them would cary the can in the event of a complaint to the Charities Commission as FHT isnt a charity.

I and many many industry colleagues can vouch for their personal integrity.

Insinuations made against individuals by people hiding behind anonymity is shameful, thankfully most people can see right through it.

just to add my twopence worth here,
the above mentioned persons are two of the hardest working people I know in the industry and I have 2 issues with this thread now.
1 what started as a simple request by a fellow therapist has now been highjacked by
yoshin Rui who has only posted detracting posts since joining in 2007.
2 the moderarting team find it acceptable to leave this inflammatory post and incorrect information on the forum whilst deleting other posts which are far less offensive personally, UI object to YR naming these two highly respected figures in the industry in a negative light.

further more the charities commision would not care less as FHT is not a charity so get your facts right.

EXTEMELY HACKED OFF BGFL
