Yes, an interesting post..well I can only give an opinion..after all, who of us can provide proof yet of precisely what happens.
Iam a muslim and in Islam, through our holy Qu'ran and hadith(example/sayings of our prophet) there is much mention of judgement, both of how we as humans should exercise our natural tendency to judge and of how Allah will judge us.
My understanding from this Islamic teaching of what happens is something like this.
First of all we are taught to be merciful in our dealings with others, for if we cannot show mercy others then how can we expect the same for ourselves on the day of judgment?
Then I think there are areas where we are given rights and responsibilities to make judgements on others, there are equally areas where we are supposed to not judge.
we are told that Allah is the gracious, merciful and kind judge of us, his ability to pass fair judgement over people is far superior to that of humans who are biased to their own beliefs and understanding.
So, God can see beyond all of this. We are told that God judges us entirely as individuals, no one will answer for another humans actions, on the day of judgement each man and woman will stand alone and we asked about their actions and how they lead their lives.
We are also told that God created everything that we know and have on earth and that he intended certain people to be muslim, christian etc, etc..so there for it must be part of his plan for people to be different.
We are also told that ultimately everyone will end up in heaven, when they have been cleansed and are ready to go there. People will recieve reward and peace.
Furthermore God will judge every human according to what they know and understand, so the criteria prehaps is different for each person. This is only fair and makes a mockery of the idea that is you do not read a certain book or follow a certain list of rules you go to hell..ie because you are not a christian or a muslim etc.
After all, if you were brought up in the depth of the amazon rain forest, it is likely you have not seen a qu'ran or bible...so you have not had the opportunity to embrace these religions...that wouldn't really be your fault would it?
I also get the impression that those who are supposed to know better and have benefited from good moral teachings, are sane and understand morals but ignore them...they might have a tougher time of it. if you understand it is wrong to steal or kill but do so anyway...
Islam teaches that behaviour, lifestyle and morals are extremely improtant and have huge impact on what happens next. There are many examples within qu'ran and hadith where one is advised to behave in a certain and that if you do it counts as a good thing for you. also how to make up for bad behaviour, we are taught that it is never too late to reform or say sorry.
Allah knows what our real intentions and feelings are, mistakes are something that humans do, apparently Allah is overjoyed when we stray from the straight path but repent and get it right again.
In islam we are taught of a system a bit like a point scoring book, we have each two angels, one who records our good deeds and the other our bad. This includes intentions as well.
I believe it is a little like this, if you have a good intention to do something but don't actually do it, it counts in your favour once, if you do it, it adds up twice. If you have a bad intention but choose not to act on it, this also counts in your favour, but if you do a bad thing you lose a point.
I think the message is that God does not want people to fail, he wants us to live good lives and he wants to help us, because he is a loving and merciful God.

1) If I remain an atheist for the rest of my life, even if I lead a life of goodness equal to or beyond that of others who are religious, and then I die to find that, to my surprise, there is in fact a God of some sort, and this God is there to pass judgement on our lives, will that God judge me based on the life I have lead as a moral human being or will I be judged and punished based on me spending a life not believing in a God?
God loves every hair on your head and God is the light of love. Love does not judge, supreme love is just that supreme.
When souls depart planet earth if they are still in the wheel of karma and the cycle of rebirth then they get the opportunity like Publisher says to review theiir life and on this basis, you the soul decide what still needs to be purified and so your free will choices begin for the next round of life on earth.
2) If the answer is that I would only be judged based on my moral lifestyle and not on whether I actually believed in a God, then it could be asked: Is actually necessary to believe in God?
There is no judgement
3) Finally, if it is not necessary to actually believe in God, then is there any point in there being Religions apart from as an actual means of teaching human morality in relation to our societies?
Some people like to belong and religion offers them a label, a community and a place to belong.
God can only be found in your own heart Giles. There is a lovely Sufi saying, 'I was looking for the self and I found God and when I found God I found the self'.
I don't think we need religion to teach human morality because everyone has there own heart of conscience. However, I do think it is imperative that self development and self realisation becomes a part of every educational process because through healing the self people move their energy into their hearts of conscience sustainably.

For me in all conversations I have had in spirit
God spirit the divine energy has all ways been loving to say the least
They donÂ’t judge as to good and bad or right or wrong
There is no heaven and hell thatÂ’s here and a human concept
They say if you can see God and Satin as one and are contrasts of the god energy the one energy
And we need all these energies to have free will here
As to a god there is a energy I believe in spirit in all I have experienced with them ghosts souls that have not pasted over because I see them talk to them I believe in grater knowledge base because of the things I say and write that I know it was not me saying it, it was me but was not out of the conchusses thought
But have never experienced a man of high a ruler that sit ready to punish quite the contrary they have never made them self any better than me and look out for me in support and love guidance they question some of the things I do but in love and respect
Religion preaches control in my experience but spirit to me has all ways preached freedom free will

Yes it is here and those that have experienced it, know that it is a reality and not an idea. Those that have experienced hell on earth can help others to ensure they don't go there.
