I am looking at going to India in Nov , with an eco-tour.
We have an overnight train journey from Delhi

Does anyone have any experience of the air-conditioned sleeper carriage?

Is it one carriage with many people sleeping or is it a small cubicle with bunk beds like the sleeper from London to Scotland?

Any info would be appreciated as it will make the difference btwn booking or not booking the adventure

RE: India :~sleeper train

I have a friend who did a tour of India by train 2 years ago- the sleeper carriages were either single cabins or bunk cabins (2 people). She was very impressed as they outdidbritish rail in both cleanliness and service. The beds folded back, much like our sleepers, but they also had a separate loo/shower compartment. It may be worth contacting the rail carrier that you are going to be using, and ask them for details of their trains - they can vary.

thanks....I would need a single cabin, that is the only way I could cope with being confined in a small space.
I wonder what the measurements are ?

I sent an email to the eco tour company, but may have to wait until Monday for their reply..thought good old HP would have an answer or two

My friend didn't give me dimensions, but she did say that the cabin was comfortable and had a large window with a table at the side, and with the bed stowed away, she was able to sit comfortably and look out of the window. She was doing a tour, so was able to walk to the restaurant car, and the lounge area. If you are going from A to B and sleeping rather than touring, then the train may be more on the minimalist side! She shared with a friend on one leg of the trip, but didn't mention feeling hemmed in. See what the rail company have to say next week. It has to be better than going by bus!!!

Hi tigress,

Yes, my wife and I did exactly that. She was a bit dubious at first, like you. But turned out all right. If you go First class or A/c 2-tier, you would be fine.

Small compartment with double-glazed window, very secure. size about 6 ft by 6ft. Two 6ft long padded seats either side of window, with 1 bunk above each. Two or Four passengers per compartment. Lower seat during day, Upper (bunk) for sleeping at night.

Here you can find some pics:

Try to avoid A/c 3-tier or any classes lower (cheaper) than that. I would.

Good Info on Indian Railways here:

Difficult to navigate but comprehensive. You just have to be patient.

Good Luck.
