Hi,

Im still trying to book this years holiday. 😮

My dilema this year is all inclusive or not. Is it worth it? Will I still end up buying food and drinks out elsewhere? Is the food good quality, offering plenty of choice?

help I don't know what to do. We are thinking of Greece.

busymum.

I've never been all inclusive simply because I'm really fussy about my food. It really seems to be hit and miss with regard to food quality with all inclusive deals. I've heard some real horror stories but also some really good reports too.

The thing with Greece is, I think anyway, that there's so many lovely little restaurants around that I wouldn't want to be tied in to getting my food at the hotel. So for me, it would be a no brainer - I'd go either b&b or selfcatering in Greece.

Well we have been 'all-inclusive' in the past when we have been abroad. The thing with 'all-inclusive' is, if you book a decent enough hotel you will get the quality you pay for. If you have children it is fab. Wish I had done it when mine were much younger TBH. There is no need to take extra money down to the pool everyday for drinks, ice cream etc. Lunch can be taken inside or just around the pool which is also great for the children as sometimes it's hard to tear them away from the pool to eat. Everything available for the little mites. They don't have to keep asking for money for this and money for that. It makes life much easier. They just have what they want, when they want, and as much of it as they want. If the children are happy then so is Mum!

However, although we have been 'all-in' we have still gone out at night to different places just to sample the location we are in and get out of the hotel. I would hate to go on holiday and be tied to one hotel for the day and night, just because I was 'all-in'.

So really I think it boils down to the star rating of your hotel, like I said you get what you pay for. I have always been impressed with what we have had.

I know what you're saying Nefra, but I think, and it may be just me, but when you have children and you go self catering, what sort of holiday is that for parents, especially a 'busy mum' to be thinking about where to grocery shop what to make for lunch dinner etc and then all the washing up.

It would just be like being at home. You want to relax and have fun!

Hope that helps!

I'd agree totally with Nefra, such as it being a no-brainer .... provided you don't end up in a huge complex miles from anywhere else. Much of the charm of Greece to me is finding a new place to eat for every meal ... even breakfast, and choosing my times and different types of meal. I love the small places where it's intimate (once a place so small that he only had three food items in total on the menu LOL, but a small group of us met up there and, er, it was such a tiny village there was nowhere else much to go - but you'll not be in a place like that).

How about having breakfast only if that's possible, and then search out nice places for the evening meal? As for lunch, I just get things as you shop in England and make up sandwiches and such, so as to be able to go off for the day - otherwise you're stuck near the same place all the time because of meals. Have a picnic lunch while out and about for the day. 🙂

Are you going to be near a town or village, to find places there to eat, or out in the absolute sticks (unlikely)? That would be the thing. People have asked such things on HP before as well, and TBH it's hard to reply, for what kind of holiday do you want? Different to mine? And is a person unused to creating their own holiday? (Things like that.)

Just one little pointer there 'V'. If you're 'all-in' and you want to go out for the day. You can opt for the packed lunch option and off you go!

I know what you're both saying and if I totally agree that if it was just a couple or just adults, then exploring the location where you’re staying and sampling the local food is the best way to holiday. But I think for families with children, it's just so easy and more relaxing for Mum and Dad and after all they are the ones that need the break;)
