Hello HP buddies,

It's a landmark Birthday for my beloved this year and I would like to take him to the Emerald Isles for a few days holiday August/September time. I suppose we will take the ferry rather than fly, as we will be taking the car. Unless we do actually fly, then hire a car. As you can probably gather we are both novice at travelling .

So, we like natural beauty scenes, he might like a spot of coastal fishing, I like the spiritual style shopping of course. Prefer B&B to hotel....so does anyone have any ideas, or are there any festival style things going on anywhere at that time?? (hopefully, might get to visit me pal enchantedhands while were over there as well :))

It's been a long time since I was there, but I fell in love with the west coast of Ireland: Connemara, Galway (lovely city) and Co. Donegal (wild and wonderful.) I think the west coast would definitely tick your boxes, Fleur, but I'm afraid I don't have any B&B recommendations. (I have a memory of sitting in the car looking out over some coastal landscape and playing Van Morrison's 'Into the mystic'. Ahhh....)

"Up the Kingdom!" i.e. Kerry.

Hi Fleur. I've spent over 2 decades visiting Ireland every year, & I miss it now! Kerry & Cork in the South West are absolutely gorgeous: miles of empty, sandy coastlines & little inlets & coves, with cliffs in places ... against backdrops of ranges behind ranges of beautiful frilly mountains ...

The famous Lakes of Killarney are magnificent (Queen Victoria loved her holiday there), & there is definitely lots of fishing of all types, both sea & freshwater. Horse-drawn carriages take you on a tour around the lower lake, & you can ride too - the Gap of Dunloe is wonderful for non-horsey people like me to try riding!

There are many fairytale-pretty little villages w good food & music around the Dingle Peninsular (famous for its friendly, photogenic wild dolphin, Fungi, who loves to play with boats & has tamed itself! There are trips across the lovely open harbour to see Fungi.) Great seafood there too, & tourist shops & entertainment a-plenty. 🙂

The Ring of Kerry is another amazingly beautiful peninsular - look on a map or check out Irish Tourist Board sites. I thoroughly recommend Ireland for walking, cycling, fishing, music & above all, friendly, funny people & the best scenery you can get anywhere. (When it isn't raining!)

Lucky you! Enjoy planning your hols. I'm v tempted to sneak into your suitcase & stow away!

Love, Starshower. (I'm REALLY not working for the Irish tourist board! Maybe I should ... ) 🙂

Great golf courses too, if your OH is into that. And shopping for artsy-crafty stuff, like Irish tweeds, art galore, & some famous pottery. And all things Celtic & mythological, of course. And great theatre. And surfing, with shoals of wild porpoises. And ancient ruins w history, mystery & magic.
Oh, I wanna go NOW!
